From what I understand, you either do the bucket thing or donate money. Wouldn't it be better to donate money? Why are all these celebrities throwing themselves water and not donating anything?

Celebrities joining in on it raises public awareness. Raising awareness leads to an increase in donations. They're not mutually exclusive. One leads to another. And it's working. In the past 3 weeks the ALS Association have received $13.3 million in donations compared to $1.7 million during the same three week period in August last year, all thanks to the increase in awareness because of the ice challenge.

You're delusional if you think that these celebs doing this aren't also donating money, as well. And it's all about raising awareness about the disease and to encourage people to donate to the cause. In the past 3 weeks, they've raised over 13 million dollars, 8 times more than what they collected during the same period last summer. So this campaign is obviously working, and it's all towards a great cause. Why are you trying to find fault with that?

I'm sure some of the celebrities donated money too, and from what I heard it did pretty good they raised like $11 million or something.

The feeling you get while doing the ice bucket challenge mimics the feeling ALS patients experience because of their nerves. It has a purpose if you can't afford to make a donation. Most celebrities make a donation and do the challenge anyway.
