I don't think it's necessarily a Western concept, but in countries like the US they tend to think love is something that can't be forced or can't be chosen, whilst in other cultures (like mormonism) they believe that any two people can fall in love, so they advise you to get married quickly and fall in love afterwards (which is something I disagree with personally). Other places in the world they even have arranged marriages or polygamous ones, so obviously these people either believe that love is not that important or that you can be in love with multiple people.
So I don't think love is something unique to the Western world, but it seems in different places in the world the ways people view it is different.
