The simplest explanation is that humans came into contact with the blood or other secretions of infected primates which is perfectly plausible since, for example, sooty mangabeys were both kept as pets and slaughtered for bushmeat in West Africa, the same region that HIV-2 is most prevalent. It would be easy for infected bodily fluids to come into contact with broken skin during the butchering process.
There are a ton of articles which draw it back to primate and non-primates carrying an SIV or a weaker strain of what we know today to be HIV, which either mutated or progressed into something that would later be transferred to humans, and cause an epidemic that has yet to be eradicated, unfortunately.
It's such an awful and disgusting virus, and the way in which it plants itself and becomes entangled within the cell-making process so that your every cell becomes tainted by this immunity-destroying virus. Blergh.
