This is very old, but Masashi Kishimoto has done an interview with Shonen Jump where they discuss one of the main characters called Sakura who happens to be a female. In the interview he discusses the role Sakura plays, and he pretty much said being a girl is a human weakness.
Quote:
Shonen Jump: Sakura and Rock Lee don't appear to have any of the special powers that ninja like Naruto, Sasuke, or Gaara have---do you think those two characters are popular because they provide a kind of reader's-eye view of the story as it unfolds?
Masashi Kishimoto: Is Sakura popular in the U.S.? Well, Lee only has Taijutsu. And as a girl, Sakura is physically weaker than the others. So I can see why it's easy to empathize with them. They represent human weaknesses.
Sexist mess. If you follow the show/manga you would see how Sakura as one of the three main characters is literally left out as the two male characters become strong. Been a fan for over 9 years and this has always bugged me and seeing this interview ticks me off even more Yes I am fuming
If you have ever read Naruto, it should be readily apparent how sexist it is (can't remember if it is as bad as Bleach though.. I suppose that was a different kind of sexism though). Poor Sakura though, she's great.
Shout to Lee for being a Plain Jane too! Gay icon of our anime times!
I can say more about how sexist Naruto is, but overall Naruto isn't that bad. Mangas like Bleach are more sexist, where female characters are usually exploited to serve young teenage boys I read both, but you can't deny there is sexism within most animes/mangas
Also Lee is different because the storyline sets it up as he is unable to use ninjutsus. Despite this, Kishimoto has Rock Lee as a strong character on par with everyone else, Sakura on the other hand is left behind because Kishimoto is a mess
It's a shame because Sakura gets hated on so much but she is strong in her own little ways. Let's not act like she is like Ino (she got her tiny moments but still).

The difference though is that Sakura has always been shown as one of the three main characters. Despite this however, only Naruto and Sasuke is shown to have surpassed the past generation, and Kishi makes Sakura so useless.
Before Shippuden, weren't like all the women minus Tsunade super weak/killed off/ignored? I don't really follow Naruto anymore but honestly, he should've just made it yaoi considering how obsessed Naruto is with Sasuke.
she inherited Tsuande's super human strength through doctrine and discipline, what type of renigging he made the damn....i'm over it but i knew he felt that way ive been a fan since day 1 and he rarely ever allows the females have their shine or overpower their male adversaries in combat
Sakura girl... and everytime she gets more power, (like with the Tsunade head thing) she just gets one upped a few chapters later and he could've included her in a trio of people with the whole Naruto/Sasuke being reincarnations of those brothers but he didn't
First off this takes place in a fantasy world. Also would you go onto say this is a human weakness? He literally says "She is a girl who is physically weaker than a male. This is a human weakness"
