Not really. I can understand where you're coming from - that sexuality is like skin colour. It shouldn't affect someone's parenting skills. That's really sweet, but it's an over-simplification of the issue. The fact of the matter is, white men can be fathers all over the world, while gay men can't. No race has to fight for their right to be parents. But certain sexualities still do.
This tragedy was exactly that - a tragedy. It could have just as easily been a straight couple. And in the past, it has been. But the thing is, conservative and anti-guy media outlets are going to use this as an argument against gay marriage and adoption rights for gay couples. It makes gays synonymous with drugs. Even those who claim they're not part of that "lifestyle." Those who want to settle down and raise a family. Conservatives are now going to say "yeah but you'll probably keep smoking pot and neglect the kid like that gay, hippy, liberal couple in Kansas."
It's a misrepresentation of the gay community, and aspiring gay parents. If this had been a straight couple, it would just be seen as a tragedy by the general public by two neglectful adults who shouldn't have been parents. But because it's a gay couple, it's going to result in a lot of "gays shouldn't be allowed to adopt" comments, and people questioning the legalisation of gays adopting.
Liberals are trying to convince the world we can do it, with good role models like Cam and Mitch on Modern Family and the lesbian couple in The Kids Are Alright, and then these two f***wits go and make every gay couple/family look bad, which just gives fuel to the conservative media.
