The Milky Way was tracked from an observatory in Chile

There is a giant black hole at the centre of our galaxy, a 16-year study by German astronomers has confirmed.

They tracked the movement of 28 stars circling the centre of the Milky Way, using two telescopes in Chile.

The black hole, said to be 27,000 light years from Earth, is four million times bigger than the Sun, according to the paper in The Astrophysical Journal.

Black holes are objects whose gravity is so great that nothing - including light - can escape them.

According to Dr Robert Massey, of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), the results suggest that galaxies form around giant black holes in the way that a pearl forms around grit.

Um.... I thought they already knew that. I remember a special ABC had on about the top 10 things that could kill our planet, and this black hole was like #8 or something like that. (Pollution came up at #1)

you all are dumb. it's been accepted theory for over 10 years that the center of every galaxy, spiral especially, is a giant black hole. sure, it's sucking stuff up, but the galaxy is forever expanding and so you don't really have much to worry about. just ask santa next year not to let you be sucked up by the giant black hole

It eventually will, but it's extremely likely that humans won't even be on the planet the time it happens. The Sun might even die and burn the planet up before the black hole sucks us up. The point is, we'll probably not be there to witness the event.

It's in the middle of the Milky Way Galaxy sucking up the Milky Way Galaxy. Nobody said anything about it sucking up the whole universe. Galaxies don't expand, the universe does.

actually, galaxies and the universe expand, it's a general rule. things go from places of higher concentration to places of lower concentration. think of diffusion.

The size alone is just so beyond our comprehension level. I mean even the true size of the sun would shock people, let alone 4 Million times bigger.

Aren't black holes like the whole basis behind the big bang theory and creation if the universe?

Oh god, I don't like thinking about these type of things. Sure, the galaxy will eventually get sucked up but that will obviously not happen for thousands, maybe millions of years from now. We're all gonna die anyways, everyone does. lol.
