I heard lots of theories about that. Although in most of rich countries, and even in my pseudo-bankrupt country, water is a common, good in quality and cheap resource, lack of water or contaminated water is a real scenario in less wealthy places.
I think poor countries will not be on condition to initiate a war, but the amount of people without water will create a high-demand potential market for the ambitious rich countries we all know. And that's how a war could be possible, maybe with an invasion to countries which have water (with random excuses to do that, of course).
We all know water is a finite resource, but, my country currently holds one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world, and we have our biggest city currently dealing with a dry.
There is still though a lot of fresh water available in ice caps, but extracting them would demand lots and lots of money and so much money is also required to transform sea water into drinkable water. The 6 countries which hold 50 percent of the earth's water reserves also have a lot of ground fresh water...
I think it is possible that water could cause a war, but it's not that close of happening, maybe in a couple hundreds of years or so. We should start worrying when water prices start picking up, that will be likely a defining sign things aren't going good.
I don't think that you kids understand the nature of wars. Wars don't occur from the bottom up, they occur vice-versa. Discontent leaders order wars from their ivory towers. REVOLUTIONS, on the other hand, occur from the bottom up. Corporate PIGS depriving us from our basic rights will not lead to a war, it will lead to a REVOLUTION.
