What do people outside St. Petersburg think of it?
The Travel Thread: All Things Travel
Topic: St. Petersburg
Previous topic: German Cities; North Korea; Tallinn, Estonia
Is it the most beautiful city in the world?
St. Petersburg / Leningrad / Petrograd was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great. It is undeniably Russia's cultural center, with its historic center and numerous museums, including the Hermitage, libraries, theaters, and more. It has remained virtually unchanged since the 18th and 19th centuries. Do you find it the most beautiful city in the world?

I went there in 2009! It's really beautiful, but when I tried to take photos inside the Orthodox church old women would yell at me
I've been to Riga as well and I'd like to visit Vilnius one day, but I feel like if you stay in these areas for more than two weeks you're gonna fall into depression. There's not much I mean

Why? Not much to do?
I mean, they all seem quaint but vibrant at the same time, in the vein of Portland, Oregon; Burlington, Vermont; Heidelberg, Germany; Bratislava, Slovakia; Offanengo, Italy
Does the weather contribute to that feeling?
Also, I've heard that the Baltic States (especially Tallinn) are a good starting place for a Baltic cruise: one can easily travel to St. Petersburg or Helsinki, and from there, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Gdansk, and more!

sis You from Italy right? I was in Milan two months ago and I had to pay to take pictures in the Duomo. So maybe you forgot to pay the bill.
About Tallinn, it seems beautiful I would love to visit, I want to know more about their unique language and culture. Kerli is from there and she slays!

I haven't been there, but from what I've gathered it isn't as pricy as, say, Paris, Vienna, or Stockholm, but it is quite pricy, especially due to the recent influx of tourists visiting the area in recent years.
But I'm sure it would be worth it!
A cheaper travel destination might be Croatia, Slovakia, Romania -- all great places but certainly cheaper!

I went on a cruise in 2009 and saw Hamburg, Copenhagen (most depressing place ever, no wonder why the suicide rates are so high there ), Gdansk, Stockholm, Gotland, Helsinki, Tallinn, and Riga. It was sunny every day except for Riga and Gdansk, but it never rained. I'd recommend to avoid cruises, you'll end up paying $3,000 for 11 days when you can see all those cities at a cheaper price and spending more days there.

Sorry, I meant a relatively short ferry ride, not cruise, to get from one place to another.
Copenhagen is such a beautiful city, some people just don't appreciate it I have to say, though, the former cities in the Hanseatic League / Baltic Cities are some of the most beautiful in the world: Hamburg, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn, and Riga are all beautiful cities.

Did you know tourists could visit?
Does it intrigue you?
Would you be scared of going there?
Tourists are allowed to enter North Korea, although taking pictures is strictly prohibited and one will be followed around 24/7 by a security guard. Any eye contact / motion / disobedience toward a guard could result in detainment or death. Recently, a marathon took place in Pyongyang, with many tourists participating. I, personally, have always wondered if it was possible to enlighten the North Korean people if visiting, who believe that North Korea won the World Cup, Kim Jong Eun does not urinate or defecate, and they are the richest country on the planet.

I'd be really interested in visiting North Korea. I've seen a few documentaries following people who've visited (VICE's documentary is one I'd really recommend if it's still available on Youtube) and it seems fascinating.
I'd be a little scared though.

Don't worry, you're not messy enough to end up in those detainment camps

I would only visit to provide tea on the fairytales they've been preached, and then tell them how they missed out on watching Hyuna slay Blacklist and Red.

You know, you only live once. Why not. I'd tell the locals how Natalia Kills is smashing and how Michael Jackson is still alive. It'd be a kii.
