Oz couple abandon Downs Syndrome baby; take twin instead
Quote:
A Thai surrogate mother has received donations from across the world to provide medical treatment for her six-month-old boy, after an Australian couple refused to take the baby on learning he had Down syndrome.
Pattharamon Janbua, 21, was left to care for her critically ill son after the Australian couple who could not have a baby paid her about £6,400 to be a surrogate mother.
The son, named Gammy, was separated from his twin sister, who is healthy and was taken by the Australians.
Mrs Pattharamon, who is married, said she became pregnant via IVF and four months later learnt that one of her children had Down's syndrome. Doctors told the Australian parents of the baby's condition, and they then said they wanted her to have an abortion.
"They told me to have an abortion but I didn't agree because I am afraid of sin," Mrs Pattharamon told Fairfax Media. She said abortion was against her Buddhist beliefs.
"Six-month-old baby Gammy was born in Bangkok with Down's syndrome and a congenital heart condition," the website says. "He was abandoned by his family and is being cared for by a young Thai woman who does not have the funds for his desperately needed medical treatment.
Not sure if it's been posted already, if so then just link it with the other thread.
In this case, its a very touchy and sensitive issue. The fact the couple abandoned the child is awful, and certainly due to the child's ill health. If the parents had enough money to pay for the surrogacy, they would also have enough to cover any medical or therapy costs the child may need. In addition, they intentionally left their child because of its ill health and in doing so, separated a child from its twin which is uncalled for.
However, i do see myself understanding this from their standpoint. They are a couple who have been angling for a child for a considerable period, and to hear news they were finally getting their wish after i'm sure years of disappointment, they were overjoyed they had their child. They originally didn't know they were to have twins so from a legal standpoint, they may have a case. But they did intentionally abandon the child, although we cannot harangue them over their ability to look after a child because we all have different limitations. I abhor what they have done, but in their situation and if i had known sooner, i can't say i would make a different choice.
It's a really difficult situation. On the one hand it seems completely immoral to not only separate twins but also to leave a child that is it need of a lot of care with a woman who is not able to provide that care. On the other hand, I understand that the couple didn't want both kids. Having a child with Down Syndrome is no joke. Plus, the couple did ask her to have an abortion but she refused.
I honestly have no idea what I would've done.
It's not a difficult situation, that's their flesh and blood they left behind. The Thai surrogate is a hero for not dumping that child on the side of the road, that couple are scum and deserve to exposed. I mean, it is their child! It has no blood relation to anyone in Thailand. I feel horrible over this, but, typical of us Australians. We are a country of selfish people who don't give a crap about others.
This is depressing. Why don't we have the names of the couple? I would like to seem them exposed, shamed and banished from the GP for filth. A damn messy mess.
