Freaky Fly Bry's Top 100 of 2008!
Before we start the top 100, here are some songs that couldn't quite make it!
200. Hinder - Use Me
The top 200 kicks off with the return of Hinder, who had one of my top 10 songs of 2006 with "Lips Of An Angel". While this was a huge rock hit, it wasn't one of my absolute favourites... however, the follow-up, "Without You", is, and it'll be much higher... but how high?
199. Duffy - Mercy
A lot of people will have this in their top 10 of the year... however, on my chart, she fell rather short, and one of the year's most creative newcomers only gets #199 for the year! Still, she has a lot of potential to stick around, including Grammy nominations... so hopefully she'll remain successful on her next album!
198. Fall Out Boy f/John Mayer - Beat It
It's been a disappointing year for Fall Out Boy on my chart, as the lead-off single from their latest album, "I Don't Care", burned out quickly and missed out on the top 200 of the year! However, THIS Michael Jackson cover managed to make it!
197. Enya - Trains and Winter Rains
Enya's latest album has a winter theme, and of course it does include Christmas songs on it... this song, the lead-off single, is pretty much as expected from her, and just manages to make the top 200.
196. Jordin Sparks f/Chris Brown - No Air
Another one that many people will have in their top 10's... this one, one of the year's biggest hits and biggest duets, also fell short for me, but both artists have songs coming up later on.
195. Buckcherry - Don't Go Away
Their biggest hit to date, "Sorry", just missed out here as it was split between 2007 and 2008, but this one from the follow-up album "Black Butterfly", just managed to make the top 200.
194. Menudo - Lost
Who would've seen it coming? A new incarnation of the classic Latin boyband was formed in 2008, and released this song, one of the year's surprise hits.
193. Ryan Star - Right Now
Originally from the TV series "Rock Star: Supernova", Ryan Star is the first contestant from that series to make my chart with a song that continues to rise on my chart, and as such, could very well appear again in 2009.
192. Geraldine McQueen - The Winner's Song
This spoof of reality show winning songs, by the brainchild of British comedian Peter Kay (who plays the role of Geraldine on "Britain's Got The Pop Factor...") ironically became a bigger hit than most of the actual winning songs on my chart!
191. Mariah Carey - Touch My Body
Quite possibly the biggest disappointment of the year for me has been Mariah's "E=MC²" album era, as it failed to have a standout moment like "The Emancipation of Mimi" did. This charted for me on early hype, and fell off my chart very fast, but still managed to make my year-end top 200.
190. Delta Goodrem - In This Life
Here's a holdover from 2007, a song that spent 3 weeks at #1 then, and my favourite from the Aussie soapstar/singer. Its run spilled over into 2008, as it became a minor US hot adult contemporary hit.
189. Switchfoot - This Is Home
From the latest "Chronicles of Narnia" film, Switchfoot returned in 2008, yet did not match the success of "The Beautiful Letdown" album. Still, it managed to be their biggest hit in over 2 years on my chart.
188. Plain White T's - Natural Disaster
While they failed to have a hit of "Hey There Delilah" proportions, the Plain White T's still managed to rank with 2 songs on my top 200.
187. Robin Thicke - Magic
This became the blue-eyed soul singer's biggest hit to date on my chart; he'd been hitting sporadically for about 6 years before this, but this was the one that really resonated for me.
186. Hedley - Old School
If there's any band that has been overplayed on Canadian radio this year, it's Hedley. While they did have a top 5 hit on my chart in 2006 with "Trip", nothing on their latest album, "Famous Last Words", stood out to that extent for me, but this song about reminiscing about the past made the top 200 at least.
185. Madonna - Give It 2 Me
A lot of artists managed to disappoint in 2008 for me, and one of the biggest ones was Madonna. After 4 straight top 10's from "Confessions On A Dancefloor", nothing from the "Hard Candy" album did anything near that, but she still managed 2 songs in my top 200, this one included.
184. Jimmy Eat World - Always Be
One of the most successful modern rock bands this decade has been Jimmy Eat World. Their biggest hit to date, "The Middle", reached #1 on my chart in 2002; since then, they've had several moderate hits, this being one of them.
183. Britt Nicole - Believe
2008 was a breakthrough year for contemporary Christian singer Britt Nicole; this was not her debut single, but it was the first off her album "Say It" that managed to reach my chart.
182. Augustana - Sweet and Low
Last year, they had the hit "Boston". Since then, they haven't been able to have the same success, but this song was a minor hit.
181. Kreesha Turner - Lady Killer
One of my favourite Canadian newcomers of the year has been Edmonton-based singer Kreesha Turner; this was one of my favourites from her, a funky tune that has a British feel to it. How high up will her biggest hit, "Don't Call Me Baby", be?
180. Britney Spears - Radar
Despite cancelling the fourth single from her album "Blackout", it still managed to hit the top 30 on my chart, much like everything she's made my chart with! She still has three songs to come, including 2 #1's... how high will they be?
179. Declan Galbraith - You and Me
His voice may have changed in the past few years, but Declan Galbraith, who turns 17 later this week, has kept up the same quality in his music. His latest album includes a few original songs as well, this being one of them... and as it's still rising up my chart, it should be able to make my 2009 chart too.
178. Plain White T's - 1, 2, 3, 4
And here's the other Plain White T's song to make it! It's probably their best attempt at following up "Hey There Delilah", even if it failed to match up to the big hit's success.
177. Cyndi Lauper - Into The Nightlife
Another surprise comeback this year was Cyndi Lauper! The singer, best known for her 80's hits, made a dance/pop comeback in 2008, and this shines as one of her finest moments since her heyday, as girls STILL just wanna have fun!
176. Sara Bareilles - Bottle It Up
Unfortunately, her breakthrough single "Love Song" was split between 2007 and 2008 for me, and therefore, didn't make either list. This song, the follow-up, however, DID manage to make it. She's currently rising up my chart with a collaboration with OneRepublic, which may make my best of 2009.

175. The Killers - Human
Another crashout here, and one that many people will have much higher in their own charts. However, for me, it didn't quite live up to expectations, but I'm hoping that further singles from "Day & Age" will do better.
174. Gavin Rossdale - Love Remains The Same
Another one of 2008's surprise comebacks was Gavin Rossdale, formerly lead singer of Bush, and currently husband to Gwen Stefani. This ballad became his biggest hit in years, and manages to rank #174 for the year on my chart.
173. Puddle of Mudd - We Don't Have To Look Back Now
Another rock band who released a ballad in 2008 was Puddle of Mudd, as "We Don't Have To Look Back Now" was a minor hot adult contemporary hit, and ranks here at #173.
172. Katy Perry - Thinking Of You
One of my favourite newcomers of 2008 has been Katy Perry as her first 2 singles both have hit #1 on my chart, and are both still to come. This one, a slower effort, is currently rising my chart, and will likely do better in 2009.
171. The Last Goodnight - Stay Beautiful
In 2007, they broke through with "Pictures of You", and in 2008, released their follow-up. I actually preferred this song, which ranks at #171 for the year.
170. Miley Cyrus - See You Again
One of the biggest media phenomena lately has been Hannah Montana, and its star, Miley Cyrus, achieved mainstream success with this song, her only appearance in my top 100.
169. John Mellencamp - My Sweet Love
Another veteran singer returned in 2008, as John Mellencamp delivered his best song in years here, and while still not quite up to his classic standards, was a respectable effort.
168. Lauren Christoff - Won't Stop
One of Canada's best newcomers of 2008 was Lauren Christoff with this upbeat pop/dance/R&B song. Hopefully we'll hear more from her in 2009!
167. Keane - The Lovers Are Losing
Another disappointment here; given how much I've enjoyed some of Keane's past stuff, this, which is my favourite single to date from "Perfect Symmetry", could only score #167 on the year-end!
166. New Kids On The Block feat. Ne-Yo - Single
Who really expected the New Kids On The Block to make a comeback in 2008? This one features Ne-Yo, and it shows in the song's sound, as it has more of a laid-back urban feel to it. How high will their comeback single, "Summertime", rank?
165. Collective Soul - All That I Know
Following up the surprise top 10 success of "Hollywood" last year, Collective Soul carried on the momentum into 2008 with this follow-up.
164. Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody
Another disappointment here... this song did manage to reach the top 20 on my weekly chart, but was on and off very quickly due to burnout, which has become very typical for them in recent years. Hopefully they'll have better on their "Dark Horse" album to rank in 2009!
163. Carrie Underwood - All-American Girl
One of the most successful American Idol winners to date, Carrie Underwood has already become a country superstar, and songs like this have maintained her success. This is her first of 2 ranking songs here; "Last Name" is still to come.
162. Celine Dion - Taking Chances
A 2007 holdover, this song continued its success into 2008, and started a streak of hits. She still has 4 more songs to come, including her #1 remake of "Alone".
161. Linkin Park - Leave Out All The Rest
The hits from their latest album, "Minutes To Midnight", continued into 2008, and this song was the fifth, and most recent, single to be taken from it. Unfortunately, it didn't quite perform as well as expected... how high is their biggest hit of the year, "Shadow Of The Day"?
160. Paramore - Decode
"Twilight" has clearly been one of the year's biggest films, and this song, performed by one of the biggest female-led rock bands of recent years, is also a good effort; this ranks as their highest appearance this year.
159. Finger Eleven - I'll Keep Your Memory Vague
Another 2007 holdover, this carried its success into 2008, and ranks as my favourite from their latest album. Here's hoping there'll be a new album from them in 2009!
158. Jonas Brothers - Lovebug
After the upbeat "Burnin' Up", the Jonas Brothers followed it up with a more laid back sound. Still, 2 more songs from them to come, also including the #1 hit "When You Look Me In The Eyes".
157. Kylie Minogue - All I See
Kylie Minogue attempted to crack the US market once again with this R&B-infused track; while it ultimately failed, it ranked here at #157. However, she did have one other song I preferred in 2008!
156. Danity Kane feat. Missy Elliott - Bad Girl
Danity Kane, despite losing 2 members after this, is one group that really surprised me this year, as they managed to place 2 songs on my chart! How high will their big hit "Damaged" rank?
155. Theory Of A Deadman feat. Chris Daughtry - By The Way
Another band that returned in 2008 was Theory Of A Deadman. Despite charting with many tracks from their album, both on the radio and on my chart, this one, which features Chris Daughtry, is their second highest on here! How high will their #1 hit "All Or Nothing" rank?
154. Taylor Swift - Love Story
Undoubtedly one of country music's hottest new superstars, Taylor Swift released her sophomore album in 2008, and this, the lead single from it, was her highest ranking on my year-end chart.
153. Deborah Cox - Beautiful U R
Deborah Cox ended a long hiatus from the charts, working with legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis here. This gave her one of her biggest hits in Canada to date, and a moderate hit on my chart as well.
152. illScarlett - Who's Got It
Canada's alternative scene blossomed in 2008, with bands such as illScarlett hitting the mainstream with songs like this. They still have one more song to come.
151. Goo Goo Dolls - Real
The 2008 Summer Olympics were held in Beijing this year, and AT&T released the official soundtrack for Team USA. The compilation album included the return of the Goo Goo Dolls, who crash out at #151 for the year. Hopefully they'll follow with a new album in 2009!

150. Lindsay Lohan - Bossy
Tabloid princess Lindsay Lohan returned in 2008, and despite not releasing a new album, this song still managed to make it to #150 on my year-end chart.
149. Lady GaGa - Just Dance
Another crashout that I expect many others to have higher, this song did manage a nice run on my chart, but has unfortunately suffered from burnout. Her follow-up, "Poker Face", is still rising up my chart and is still to come here too.
148. Declan Galbraith - Ego You
While "You and Me" will be higher in 2009, "Ego You" managed a decent run in 2008, though not coming close to the run of "An Angel", still placed respectably.
147. Crash Parallel - Rain Delays
One of the best new Canadian bands of 2008, this song had among the most random lyrics of the year! Still, "World We Know" is still to come.
146. Sixx:AM - Life Is Beautiful
Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue formed a new band, Sixx:AM, and this song deals with his drug addiction. They had a few singles after this, but they didn't come close to this one.
145. John Mayer - Say
After the entire "Continuum" era disappointed me, this song from the soundtrack to "The Bucket List" brought him back to quality. Still, he has a way to go before matching up to his first 2 albums.
144. Kid Rock - All Summer Long
Another crashout here, and love him or hate him, Kid Rock was surely unavoidable in 2008 with this summertime anthem. Taking samples from "Werewolves of London" and "Sweet Home Alabama", he melded them together quite well for a true anthem.
143. Girls Aloud - Call The Shots
My favourite song from them to date, it did so well in 2007 that it spilled over into 2008... and made this list too! "Can't Speak French" is still to come.
142. Shiloh - Operator (A Girl Like Me)
A new Canadian teen singer, she had a minor hit on my chart in 2007, but 2008 was the year she really broken through.
141. Bryan Adams - I Thought I'd Seen Everything
Another disappointing comeback here, the legendary Bryan Adams only managed to make it this high on the year-end with the lead-off single from his latest album. Hopefully he'll have more classics down the road!
140. Staind - Believe
Now these guys surprised me, as I'd been disappointed with their last album. However, this became their second biggest hit to date on my chart, with only "It's Been Awhile" (which reached #1 in 2001) doing better.
139. Fuel - Leave The Memories Alone
Another band that pleasantly surprised me was Fuel, whose return on "Wasted Time" made my top 10 last year. Future singles continued the success, including this song.
138. Jewel - I Do
Jewel re-invented herself as a country singer in 2008, but this song stayed true to her folk-styled roots, which helped it outrank lead single "Stronger Woman", which missed the top 200.
137. Jully Black - Until I Stay
One of Canada's most successful R&B singers, this song was turned into a dance song, and ended up getting her biggest hit ever on my chart.
136. Adele - Chasing Pavements
The UK has had many successful acts this year, with Adele being one of the biggest. This song was a moderate hit on my chart... but to date, she hasn't hit my chart with any of her other singles!
135. Jessica Simpson - Come On Over
Another singer who went country in 2008, Jessica Simpson did a decent effort, but not quite up to par with her pop songs.
134. Lenny Kravitz - I'll Be Waiting
Lenny Kravitz also returned this year with another laid-back song... this showed he didn't lose his quality after not releasing for a few years.
133. Paula Abdul - Dance Like There's No Tomorrow
Another surprise comeback this year... Paula Abdul, known lately as a judge on American Idol, revived her music career with this song, produced by fellow judge Randy Jackson. Hopefully this'll be a preview of the sound she'll explore on her next album!
132. Girls Aloud - Can't Speak French
This funky music gave Girls Aloud their highest appearance solely within 2008... and the title lies as they did indeed record a French version of this song!
131. Faber Drive - Sleepless Nights (Never Let Her Go)
Following 3 huge radio hits, this song unfortunately flopped... but their big hit from this year, "When I'm With You" is still to come. How high will it rank?
130. Avril Lavigne - Innocence
129. Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing
Avril Lavigne continued releasing singles from "The Best Damn Thing" album in 2008, however these 2 failed to reach the #1 success of "Girlfriend" or "When You're Gone", my #1 song of 2007. Still, not a bad effort here!
128. Crash Parallel - World We Know
And here's the highest from these guys, it was a major hit on Canadian radio and did decently on my chart too.
127. Carrie Underwood - Last Name
Here's Carrie's highest for this year, one of her crazy story songs... just make sure you don't forget your last name in a case like this!
126. Lights - Drive My Soul
Despite not even reaching the top 40 on my chart, Canadian newcomer Lights had enough longevity with her debut single that she managed to rank this high on my year-end! With "February Air" currently rising, expect more from her in 2009.

125. Dragonette - Competition
After "I Get Around" missed the boat and failed to make my chart, this finally gave Dragonette their first entry on my chart... and it ended up being a moderate hit.
124. David Archuleta - Crush
American Idol gave us 2 Davids this year, and this one was the runner up. Still yet to hear from the winner, David Cook... how high up will "Light On" be?
123. Alex Band - Only One
After releasing 2 albums with The Calling, Alex Band went solo this year, and this song definitely lived up to expectations. Hopefully more will be heard from his solo career in 2009!
122. State of Shock - Too Pretty
This is one of my favourite tracks on their debut album "Life, Love and Lies", and while awaiting a fourth single choice, this track made my chart, and gave these guys from Vancouver another hit.
121. Creature - Pop Culture
A band from Quebec with their "alterna-pop" style, so far this is their only song to make my chart. Quite a different sounding song, but a good song regardless.
120. Donna Summer - Stamp Your Feet
Who saw this comeback coming? Donna Summer released her best since the days of disco, it seems! This shows that, at 59 years of age, she still has what it takes to deliver a catchy dance/pop song!
119. Pink - Sober
The follow-up to "So What" (which is still to come), this song is still rising up my chart, so expect another appearance from this in 2009!
118. Estelle f/Kanye West - American Boy
Estelle was one UK star who got her big international breakthrough this year with the help of her "American Boy", Kanye West. Unfortunately, follow-up singles to this did not do as well as this, which is her biggest hit to date.
117. Simple Plan - When I'm Gone
Another 2007 holdover here, this song peaked at #2 at the very end of 2007, and carried over into 2008 as well. Still 2 more to come from these guys!
116. Colbie Caillat - The Little Things
The third single from her debut album "Coco" unfortunately failed to become the hit that her first 2 singles were... and I realize that one of those 2 is still to come on this list.
115. The Spill Canvas - All Over You
Another new band here, these guys had a catchy pop/rock song that became a moderate hit this year.
114. Saving Abel - 18 Days
Unfortunately, their debut single "Addicted" just narrowly missed here, but this follow-up single managed to outdo it on my chart!
113. Ne-Yo - Closer
Ne-Yo went electropop on this song, which ended up becoming one of his biggest hits to date, and a nice change from his Stargate ballads (even if I do like those generally myself).
112. Madonna f/Justin Timberlake & Timbaland - 4 Minutes
Another disappointment here... I expected a lot better from Madonna, but this song ended up getting overplayed fast, and I got sick of it... so it ended up missing my top 100 for the year! Hopefully she'll one day return to the quality I've come to expect from her!
111. Celine Dion - Fade Away
One of my favourite songs from her "Taking Chances" album, this became a moderate hit on my chart following her #1 success of "Alone". She still has three more songs to come.
110. Brandy - Right Here (Departed)
Another return that delivered was Brandy, who managed a moderate hit with this song, which became one of her biggest hits in years.
109. All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell
While it didn't do quite as well as some of their past hits for me, this was still a moderate hit for the Rejects, who were definitely welcomed back this year.
108. Elise Estrada - Crash and Burn
Elise Estrada is one case where Canadian singers can often do just as well as their international counterparts. This Mariah Carey-esque ballad did moderately well, but didn't quite do as well as "Unlove You", which is still to come.
107. MGMT - Electric Feel
One of the year's most unique newcomers are alternative band MGMT, and this song was easily my favourite from them.
106. Panic At The Disco - Nine In The Afternoon
They dropped the ! from their name... and in return, they got my favourite song from them! However, this was their only success this year, as nothing they've released since could compare.
105. Kanye West - Love Lockdown
And now here's someone who really changed his sound... as he, who normally raps, actually sings on this song! This became one of my favourite Kanye songs to date, showing how diverse he can be.
104. Oasis - The Shock Of The Lightning
Another band who returned in 2008 was Oasis; this song became another hit from them, and did well on my chart too, however I do prefer their 90's hits over this.
103. Mobile - The Killer
One of Canada's finest rock bands of the past few years returned in 2008 with a new album... unfortunately, it's appeared to have a little bit of a sophomore slump, but I'm hoping there'll be more singles from it in 2009.
102. Ashlee Simpson - Boys
Originally scheduled to be the third single from her album "Bittersweet World", this song ended up doing moderately well for Ashlee on my chart, but Mrs. Pete Wentz has 2 more songs still to come on here.
101. illScarlett - Life Of A Soldier
And here's another Canadian alternative rock band, with their highest appearance of the year, just falling short of the top 100. Who actually made it into the top 100? Find out next time!

100. Jordin Sparks - One Step At A Time
PEAK: #15
American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, while met with instant success on her songs "Tattoo" and "No Air" on the airwaves, was met with mediocrity on my chart at first, as both of those songs could only get as high as #34 on my chart. This one, however, I liked a lot better, and kicks off my year-end top 100.
99. Artists Stand Up To Cancer - Just Stand Up
PEAK: #8
Charity singles just haven't been the same since the days of "We Are The World" and "Do They Know It's Christmas"... but this song, while it did not last very long, still managed to make my top 10. 15 female artists joined together to help fight against cancer, and delivered a memorable song along the way.
98. Rihanna - Rehab
PEAK: #13 (still rising)
I originally charted this Timbaland-produced, Justin Timberlake-esque ballad when it was rumoured to be the fifth single from her album "Good Girl Gone Bad"... and then she went and re-released it, cancelling this single! It was eventually put back on the schedule... but as an eighth single! So that's how, despite still rising on my chart, and possibly reaching a new peak in 2009, that it makes my top 100 of 2008. 2 more Rihanna songs are still to come on here.
97. Anastacia - I Can Feel You
PEAK: #12
It was a disappointing comeback for Anastacia... but unlike many others who returned in 2008, she actually managed to make my year-end top 100! So far, nothing from the "Heavy Rotation" era has managed to live up to the quality of her earlier stuff, but this is the closest she's got.
96. Celine Dion - Eyes On Me
PEAK: #18
Celine Dion kept taking chances in 2008, and this song saw her explore new sounds. It was a different sound for her, and one that was good enough to rank in my top 100 for the year... but more conventional songs for her ranked higher.
95. Pussycat Dolls - I Hate This Part
PEAK: #8
I wasn't sure if the Pussycat Dolls would have a sophomore slump after Nicole Scherzinger's solo material or not, but thankfully, they didn't disappoint me at all! 2 of their songs made my year-end top 100, including this one, very reminiscent of the Stargate sound (as one of its songwriters is also Scandinavian), which is still on my chart now. How high did "When I Grow Up" rank?
94. Lady GaGa - Poker Face
PEAK: #8 (still rising)
Her debut single "Just Dance" is one I liked, but got sick of too fast to make the top 100. This one, on the other hand, is still rising up my chart, and currently in my top 10. Hopefully her album "The Fame" will produce more hits into 2009!
93. Linkin Park - Shadow Of The Day
PEAK: #1 (4 weeks)
I liked this song so much in 2007, when it spent 4 weeks at #1 on my chart, that it kept going into 2008, enough to make my year-end top 100! Unfortunately, this was as big as their success has been, as the singles after this failed to replicate the success of "Shadow Of The Day", which remains my favourite from them.
92. Celine Dion - My Love
PEAK: #4
More Celine here, and this one was taken from her latest greatest hits collection. Still to come is her remake of Heart's "Alone"... how high will it be?
91. Beyoncé - If I Were A Boy
PEAK: #7
This was completely different than what I expected from Beyoncé when she returned, as it was a lot slower in tempo than I thought she'd do! But it did give some insight on what she'd do had she been a boy, and its lyrical content helped her score an 18th top 10 hit on my chart, including her hits with Destiny's Child. This is her only appearance on my top 100.
