Oh good, I thought it was just me who thought it felt like there wasn't one clear-cut "Song of the Summer" even though it seems like there's always one super ubiquitous smash hit that happens to dominate the charts all summer.

I mean, obviously Fancy's gonna take the crown (right?), but I don't know, it doesn't feel as...universal or something.

I feel like "Fancy" has to be the song of the summer, I hear that song everywhere.

I'll be disappointed if Rude overtakes Fancy as SOTS. Fancy felt much bigger and defining of what 2014 Summer was.

Seems awfully late in the game for that to happen, no?

Interesting article, but I think the author is reading too much into it. The public didn't collectively decide that Blurred Lines and Call Me Maybe were to be the "summer songs" of the past couple of years. Most people aren't aware of the charts. It's just the timing. People just bought/listened to those songs a lot at the time and the chart calculated that.

Had Gangnam Style blew up a bit earlier, or had We Are Young blew up a bit later, they would have been the summer songs too. It's just timing really. We don't have a really massive hit on the level of Blurred Lines right now, but in the autumn we might do. There doesn't have to be a song which dominated all summer, it's just coincidence that it happened that way the past couple of years imo.

Also, he does point out that there aren't many alternative/rock songs crossing over to mainstream radio, but isn't Rude an example of such a song? It's played on alternative and pop iirc.

I think Fancy will be #1 on Billboard's summer chart when things are all said and done. I love the song, but I can agree that it's not as universal, since the older audience probably aren't very aware of the song. Blurred Lines and Call Me Maybe did well on adult contemporary radio (especially Blurred Lines considering it's genre and subject matter), whilst I don't think Fancy will.

I was thinking the same thing. It's the first time in three years where we have not had just one dominant summer song.

But, this is all coming down to sales once again. This is the first summer since 2008 where the #1 HDS in mid-late July sells less than 200,000 per week:

The more sales continue to dip, the more airplay and streaming will become a factor. In the past, most of the summer songs (Blurred Lines, Call Me Maybe, I Gotta Feeling, etc) were sales driven.

IMO the songs out there are a bit boring, providing us with kinda boring charts. It feels like there's no big artist or huge single. I mean, Ariana Grande is probably the most popular singer having a hit this summer. Iggy is now popular, but she wasn't before Fancy blew up.

I love Iggy Azalea and I'd love her to get that #1 Summer Song !!!

It's interesting how most of the time the truly giant hits are by male artists.

The Summer is waiting for the smash Booty to be released and be SOTS.

The new Hot 100 formula sucks. But more so the consumers suck.

It's really not too late. Fancy smashed in the SPRING. It was dying down as June 21 rolled around.
