I think Holiday Inns have really good value + they almost always give you a good breakfast in the morning. I've always had good experiences with them.
Marriott's are really nice but they're more expensive. Marriotts sometimes have really, really great locations (I was very lucky to stay in the Times Square one once & it was a great experience - recommend it so long as you know that it's extremely expensive & needs to be planed months in advance as a special thing to do).
I'm in love with Holiday Inn, it's comfort without going over budget. Honestly, it's not like I spend a lot of time inside my hotel room when I'm out, so why spend the extra cash for extra luxuries I probably won't take advantage of?

This is exactly how I view it. I'm someone who doesn't like to spend a ton of time in a hotel on vacation.
Boutique hotels are the nicest, in my opinion. They are very nice, with a unique local flavor at each location, without being particularly expensive. Some of the best are part of the KIMPTON HOTELS company.
