The Weeknd, Tinashe, Cassie, Jhene, Miguel, etc. aren't rap artists, yet they released mixtapes that helped them garner mainstream buzz. So, I don't see the issue. I doubt pop artists are concerned about "garnering buzz," but rather making money as soon as possible.
I'm all for it. It's a great way for people to be introduced to their music, and is a smart move to get loyal supporters when their proper stuff come out.
