I am talking about what you'd call a one hit wonder. I dont want to shade, but like Carly Rae. I heard she's bankrupt and I'm wondering, CMM sold what? 15 million? That'd be over 15 million dollars, What percentage of that could she have gotten? Not even 10%?

It depends on their contract and if they wrote the song or not. iTunes keeps about 30% of the sales price of a song, with the record company and writers getting the other 70%. The record company will then give the artist their cut, the less successful you are when you (re-)sign your contract the less favourable your share as you don't have a leg to stand on in negotiations.


I'd guess Carly got next to nothing from each sale of Call Me Maybe from being the singer, and she would've had to share her writers cut with 4 other people so that'd be a tiny amount too.

Actually, doing the math Carly probably still got about $2.5 million, assuming she gets like 10 cents from each sale ($1.5 mill total) as well as say 8-10% cut of the $10.5 left to share between Record Company and Writers after iTunes takes their share. So not too shabby off a single massive smash.


I'm assuming that a track costs $1 exactly, by the way. Though it's 1am and I'm knackered so expect the next post to drag my awful math skills.
