Cultural Appropriation or Cultural Segregation?
I mean, isn't that basically where it's going? Voluntary segregation? I found this extract from a topic on Reddit and thought it hit the nail on the head
Quote:
"It's the demand that cultures cease the exchange of ideas and concepts.
Specifically, it's the demand that white, western culture cease the the exchange of ideas. It's bogus ******** that comes almost exclusively from the mouths of American white liberal guilt-trippers (I rarely hear the same thing from their European counterparts), and whites with a quarter (or less) of their ethnic makeup from other cultures."

Repost this some other time. Enough mess already ensued in the Time thread for one day.

Yeah, I find that free expression is becoming more and more curtailed over the last few years. Can't people just do what they want to do if they're not harming anyone?

I've always found the term "appropriation" stupid when used this way. Minorities say it's a bad thing but what they're doing by saying that is encouraging discrimination and segregation,

The whole "appropriation" concept is beyond the pale. The world was built on taking ideas from all cultures and building a newer, better society for everyone.

So you ignore one person's (reasonable and well written) opinion, because they are linked to something you deem "less than"? You could say that about anywhere though?
You should never generalise, or act prejudice against people.

Lemme adblock that gif a few posts up first of all
Secondly I'll just quote this amazing article because I couldn't have said it better
Quote:
So there is an unequal exchange between Western culture – an all-consuming mishmash of over-simplified and sellable foreign influences with a dash each of Coke and Pepsi – and marginalized cultures.
People of all cultures wear business suits and collared shirts to survive. But when one is of the dominant culture, adopting the clothing, food, or slang of other cultures has nothing to do with survival.
So as free as people should be to wear whatever hair and clothing they enjoy, using someone else’s cultural symbols to satisfy a personal need for self-expression is an exercise in privilege.
Because for those of us who have felt forced and pressured to change the way we look, behave, and speak just to earn enough respect to stay employed and safe, our modes of self-expression are still limited.

Calling something appropriative isn't demanding that cultures "segregate" themselves. It's asking for people to respect other people's culture and promote their ideas as original, as opposed to borrowing whatever they deem fit and marginalizing the people.
And this is coming from a gay Latino, so I clearly don't fit those parameters in the original post.

Appropriation is the mocking, or trivializing of a culture. It's possible to use ideas from a different culture of yours with respect and dignity.

I'm ignoring their opinion, and yours, because cultural appropriation is wrong. There is no if and or but about it. There is no argument. You, as a white person, have no business wearing cornrows or braids ~~cos i'm ratchet xD~~, Indian headdress ~~cos my great-grandpa was 1/136 cherokee~~ or a wafuku or a hanfu under the guise of "kimono" ~~cos Asia~~. Let it go and get over it, as you racists love to say.
And the argument especially doesn't come exclusively from white liberals, so again, no.

Asians appropriate English fashion with Harajuku and Lolita yet NO ONE has a problem with it, so why are you throwing temper tantrums over white people wearing kimonos? Are the dozens of black women I see wearing straight blonde weaves supposed to stop that too?

Kinda. I mean there are plenty of things to get angry about but a white girl in a headdress is not worth it.

When the intent is not to mock, denigrate, or belittle, it's not harmful.

The hypocrisy that this is more ignorant than/on the same level as all those things you mention
Assuming I do any of that.
Assuming it because of my race.
Assuming I am racist because of my race
You're not ignoring the posts because if you were, you wouldn't be replying and quoting me, so I don't get why you're lying to look nonplussed. You're ignoring the idea of being challenged because you clearly know there's a chance that what you stand for is built of sand.

Because Asians are exoticized and marginalized by whites. That's the issue. The issue is when the hegemonic culture takes from a marginalized culture, while still oppressing them.
White people wearing kimonos exemplifies this. Whites aren't oppressed.
