Hey everybody.

Ever since I visited Germany a few months back I have really wanted to learn the German language, since I do not know any other language apart from English.

I am wondering if any of you fellow german speakers or people who have learnt German as a second language could offer up any tips on how to get to grips with it, I am sure there are a few fellow sistrens on here in a similar situation and could do well with any advice too.

I don't know or speak German. But some general tips are just:
- always use it when possible, you lose what you don't use
- Find someone to speak it with, or an internet community to practice with
- Don't give up.

Ich spreche Deutsch a bit.

You could try duolingo to get some basics.

I'm from The Netherlands but I live at the German border so speaking German is kind of natural for me.
Especially since the local dialect is quite similar to German

Personally the 4 German cases are the hardest thing but it's not that difficult if you practice a lot

Alot of people say It's pretty hard to learn. I can't tell since It's my native language.

Try to read German websites/books and watch shows in German. Or listen to German artists.

It is quite a hard language to learn, because it is more grammatical than most languages and has so many rules.

When you feel you have a fairly good command of the language try to take some trips to German speaking countries to get a better feeling of the language. Listening to German music might help too. Viel Glück!

Some folks say that it is a hard language, but It won't be as difficult as long as you make sure to learn the four cases (they take a while based on what I've seen from some American friends who have tried; for me it comes naturally as this is my father's native language and I learned it as a kid) and every noun along with its gender. There are some language websites like Livemocha where you can practice with other students and/or native speakers.

If you can afford the time and expense try to take a Summer immersion course in either Germany or Austria.

I've heard that too, but any language is going to be tricky to learn, especially since my country are ignorant to the notion of learning a language.

Not a good representation but to get into the pronounciation, maybe. Most our expressions come off a bit rough and harsh. It really is the best to communicate and stay in touch with native German speakers to improve your skills but there are tons of exercising forums/dictionaries out there that I'm sure you find someone you could easily start with.

Learn Swedish

Swedish is such a wonderful language from what I've heard. I even contemplated taking a course before but eventually decided against it. It's so different from languages like German, English and French.
