This may not seem like much, but the last words my mom said to me before she died were ‘Baby, I’m scared’. She wasn’t scared of anything – she was a paramedic for over 20 years and had practically seen it all. That was the most horrifying part about watching her die. In all the times she’d been forced to go to the hospital, I had NEVER heard her say that she was scared.

I had to tell my dad that it was ok for him to go, that I would be ok. A few minutes later he was gone. This was the last time I lied to my dad.

I work in pediatrics and the saddest confession I heard came from my six year old terminal cancer patient. She said that she blamed her brother one time for a bad thing she did. Her brother got in trouble and she thought God punished her with cancer and she thought if she set things straight he’d spare her. She died before she could apologize to her brother.
My great uncle flew for the Navy in WWII and then flew commercial jets for 30 years. While laying in a hospital bed his last words to my dad were “Looks like a good night to fly”
