I wouldn't say it's the toughest part, not even close. Being able to place light in a specific area of space so it can create an image, would be the toughest part. Not that it matters to the people watching at home though. You're right that it's a nice advancement for TV stuff, but it's nothing major for the scientists currently trying to manipulate light in space. And I guess I consider huge leaps in technology to be more than just a combination of things already available. Bullet time cameras, infrared and motion tracking are not really new but this is the first time it's been used in such a mainstream way.
But not to be a party pooper, I did enjoy it as a novelty. I think countdown shows (TRL, BET) would take full advantage of it since it would be easier to get more celebs to "appear" on the show (at least to folks at home).
