At those Fashion Awards, Madonna won 4 awards that night with her album Ray Of Light and Janet won 1 award with The Velvet Rope.
Janet performed WHAT ABOUT.
The true story is that the producers of that show wanted her to perform her song "GO DEEP" and have fun because the Fashion show is a fun show. They didn't want her to perform such a sad song about wife's abuse and stuff of that matter.
Janet insisted to perform WHAT ABOUT anyway because she said that it was an important message and if people could hear about it in their homes, that would be a good thing.
At the end of the performance, people in the audience were so shocked and thrilled that it was a spontaneous standing wow-vation !!!
Madonna was in the room while janet was performing and i remember she said in one of the interview she gavet after the show :
interviewer : "what performance were you impressed with ?"
madonna : "mmm (pause) Janet Jackson."
