I've noticed whenever Joan Rivers says something offensive like when she insulted Adele's newborn on Twitter, people use the lame excuse: "She's a comedian it's ok"

First off, she's not doing a show she's insulting a newborn so she's scum.

The whole part of being a comedian is you're not to be taken seriously. So they can make homophobic, racist(unless you're white), sexist etc jokes and get away with it.

Because it's what they do, they make people laugh. Just because you don't find the joke pleasant because you stan for Adele or w/e doesn't mean it's not funny. We are all hypocrites when it comes to this. We holler if they make fun of people/pop stars we dislike yet when they turn on our fave we are suddenly shocked, displeased, baffled, appalled.
It's just humor, if it's not up your alley ignore and move on.

There are comedians who are taken seriously, like Louis C.K. and Ellen DeGeneres, and these are generally the ones who don't freely insult people.

But comedians DO get flak if they go too far, like Daniel Tosh did when he made a rape joke during one of his shows and Dane Cook did when he made a joke about that Colorado movie theater shooting days after it happened.

They do get smack for it. "Comedians" who get laughs by insulting people are never generally considered good comedians.

Anyways... Ever since Joan Rivers said what she said about Adele and then refused to apologize because she saw nothing wrong with her comments, I was just really offended and made aware of this exact issue. Everyone thinks it's okay because "it's their job", and comedians really aren't to be taken that seriously anyways, but in the case of someone like Joan Rivers, what she's doing is no longer making jokes. She's a bully and I'm sick of listening to her make fun of people when she has so many damn flaws herself. And the fact that a fellow comedian (Adam Hills) even thought she took it too far when she said what she said about Adele should be enough. I mean... She's really quite hypocritical. Not judging, but has she looked in the mirror lately? I mean... Do people ever say, "When I grow up, I wanna look just like Joan Rivers" or "I wanna be just like Joan Rivers"? No. She's not even setting an example for people who want to go into her profession. She's just being rude and obnoxious. She does it all the time. She's made comments about Jennifer Lawrence, too, that I found to be very offensive. She seems to genuinely find enjoyment in making jokes about others' appearances and passes them off as jokes when I really wouldn't be surprised if she used that as an excuse to cover up her actually making fun of them.

They don't get a pass at all, all of them are dragged 24/7. But basically it's a scenario where you know they're making a joke, and they're not saying it's intelligent or P.C., but if there's a single thing off-bounds in comedy than what is the point? Like how sick people make jokes about their terrible illnesses, it's a way to work through the pain.

The type of comedian is called an "Insult Comic" , its their shtick. It's not your regular drags you see on ATRL, there is more wit behind it. The good ones like Kathy Griffen, Joan Rivers, and Don Rickles (as of late Joan has been very lazy with it) know how to throw it without being overly mean. Its humor at the end of the day.

There are tacky ones of course, but its just comedy at the end of the day.

But, Rihanna is a singer not a comedian.

Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin, Bianca Del Rio...INSULT COMICS. That is their thing, that's what they do, they insult people. It's their job and anyone who takes them too seriously is just stupid.

I know they're just joking, but those jokes come from things that they're actually thinking, so it can be a bit offensive.
