We've heard and observed in The Lounge section, many politicians, spokespersons, priests, journalists, etc... putting **** together that doesn't make sense against homosexuality and its members.
Should there be a law to stop these people? Because I'd rather have a country with enough awareness and open-mided people than a so-called "free" country where people state their opinions messing with the minority.

Yes. Hate speech is banned under the law, however what qualifies as hate speech is open to interpretation, people think that just because its their 'opinion' it should be respected but no, your opinion should not be respected if it is based on lies, ignorance and hate.

What law? There is no world law. If you're in the US the 1st Amendment protects even hateful speech. As the Supreme Court said in allowing Westboro Baptist Church to picket funerals:


"Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and - as it did here - inflict great pain. On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker. As a Nation we have chosen a different course - to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate."

Free speech protects all opinions, not just the ones that you agree with. Just like I have a right to say that I think gays should be allowed to get married, another person has the right to say they think they shouldn't. You can't just take away a person's right to say what they want because you "don't like it". When that speech turns into an action is when it turns into a hate crime which is punishable under the law.

Homophobic opinions (such as being against gay marriage) should be allowed, but verbally attacking someone for being gay should be illegal. I'm not 100% sure if we're discussing both or if we're just discussing the opinions one.

Btw, I hope none of y'all talking about Freedom of Speech are referring to the US 1st Amendment, as that doesn't cover Inflammatory words which may encourage someone to commit acts of Violence in retaliation.
