Mixed reviews for new Bond theme
Stuff.co.nz | Friday, 19 September 2008
Jack White and Alicia Keys' new theme song for upcoming James Bond film Quantum of Solace has hit the net, but early reviews have been mixed.
Another Way to Die, which teams the White Stripes rocker with the American soul singer, was first played on BBC Radio 1 several hours ago.
The song is the first time a James Bond theme has featured a collaboration, and was recorded after a proposed joint effort between Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson failed to materialise.
The song is a soft-loud piano-based rock track, with the lyrics referencing James Bond folklore.
White sings: "I know the player with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty," and Keys replies: "Another one with the golden tone voice and then your fantasy."
Reviews posted online are mixed.
Los Angeles Times reviewer Todd Marten said the song was better than Chris Cornell's effort for Casino Royale, but said Keys' voice did not "mesh" well with White's.
"Another Way to Die reveals itself to be little more than hard-rock updating of the James Bond fanfare," he said.
"It's passable, certainly, and for a brief second it even sounds as if the song might veer into harder, Black Sabbath-like territory.
"But it soon slinks away into jam-packed busy verses, where orchestral flourishes and trash-can rhythms battle for airtime under the anonymously shouted vocals of Keys and White.
Another online reviewer claimed the song was "everything I could have hoped for".
"Jack White is amazing as always, and Alicia Keys adds the perfect vocals to this."
The Quantum of Solace soundtrack is due for release on October 28.
