Born This Way was right in the middle of the year of Don't Ask, Don't Tell - the latter of which changed the USA's viewpoint of LGBT people everywhere. I'm not saying BTW was a cause or had direct impact - but a huge superstar telling everyone that it was okay to be gay, straight, bisexual, lesbian, or transgendered had a huge effect on a large sect of society.
