I'm excited to see this! Sean Penn is brilliant and I'm quite fond of James Franco as well, but I guess I will have to see it before I can say whether it's as good as I'm expecting it to be.
As for making up for Brokeback's loss, again, I guess we'll have to wait until it is released. I personally found Crash (the movie Brokeback lost out to for Best Picture) to be just a tad overrated and cliche in it's subject matter, but then I guess I am also partially biased because I relate more to the material in Brokeback. My beef about Brokeback is that when I mention thinking it was a good film I get a lot of almost disgusted faces, and many from people who have never even seen it. There seems to be a perception that you have to be gay to appreciate the story, but that just isn't the case. The idea of a forbidden romance is something that I'm sure a lot of people (not just gays) can relate to, and that's essentially what this story is.
