Steve was clever but at the same time, stubborn. He was against a phone larger than 3.5" and basically said an iPad Mini would ruin the iPad's legacy.
The iPhone 5 sold 90M units in just one year. The iPad Mini started selling more than the iPad 4.
Apple are taking things slow. But this year, they have the new MacBook that's supposed to be mixing MacBook Air with the iPad Air + new phone's etc. and other new products, rather than more of the same. So should be interesting.

Other than that. Seriously, Apple have a simple OS to focus on content. If you're bored with your phone/iPad, get some content rather than worrying about how it looks.
If you want to worry about how gorgeous your phone is, Jailbreak or get an Android.
With Mac's though, Apple constantly improve the OS. So that's never boring. Always good new features, without completely ****ing with the whole OS.
That said, I'm finding Microsoft are hitting back hard. So much more interesting now than when Windows 8 first came out.
