Music served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Bob Santelli of the Grammy Museum explains music’s role in social change, then and now.
Quote:
And clearly there is a new civil rights movement afoot: the gay rights movement. Some artists are writing; Macklemore for one. Born This Way by Lady Gaga is another song that identifies particular challenges in society. Kids sing this song and feel galvanized to confront that challenge. So it’s happening, but not to the extent that it did back in the 1960s. In the 1960s the Civil Rights Movement was just exploding with music.
It is so true though, if people put aside their dislike for either artist they would realise that those 2 songs have helped tremendously for the civil rights/gay rights, they influence people a lot.
So proud of Gaga... And I think this is also the one of many reasons that artists nowadays are safer, mostly don't tackle it anymore, they just do it for money and what their labels told them.
This is so so untrue. And the gay rights movement HAS been happening since the 60s, and these two who are not even part of the LGBT community have not spurred anything nowadays What a slap in the face to actual activists and LGBT artists who are ignored at the expense of people like these two
I think people should really give Gaga more credit for all she's done, tbh. She's changed the minds of thousands of people, saved the lives of thousands and helped in making LGBT rights generally accepted - especially among youth. And of course, she's helped thousands of people to accept themselves.

Lady Gaga identifies as Bisexual.... thats the "B" in "LGBT".

1.) Gaga is bisexual
2.) You don't have to be LGBT to support and spread awareness of gay rights

Such arrogance here. Gaga and Macklemore are bringing attention to LGBT rights, them being straight means nothing. They have a unique platform and both are using it to show their support and shed light on LGBT related issues.

Don't worry, History does NOT forget.
Gaga will forever be regarded as one of pioneers in the gay rights movement in the modern day and history will be her witness.
I seriously don't get why some people get mad when a straight person supports gay rights. Would you rather they be homophobic? And let's not act as if Gaga or Macklemore themselves claim to be civil rights leaders.
