Youkai Watch is the new hot propriety in Japan, the game was released for the 3DS in July 2013 and it's currently #1 in the weekly charts (even though it was released a year ago), also with more than 1 million copies sold since launch.
The anime is snatching views and the manga is making money. Toys are selling out forcing people to line up for new shipments. The sequel for the 3DS is currently the most pre-ordered game in Japan.
just because a new anime show featuring monsters is popular doesn't mean pokémon is over, or that it's snatching its wig. pokémon as an entire franchise has lasted over a decade. jibanyan is not the new pikachu... pokémon is a global success. youkai watch may be a great success in japan, but i don't see it achieving the same success as pokémon in the long run. we'll see. i'll definitely look into it more myself. it has piqued my interest.
