Satoru Iwata has confirmed to investor that the company already knows what it has planned for its follow-up to the struggling Wii U.
“We are preparing for our next hardware system,” the Nintendo president told investors. “In fact, we already have a clear idea to some extent about the direction our next hardware is going to take.
“Once we launch a new platform, we naturally start to prepare for the next one. As it takes several years to develop a single platform, if you ask us whether we are preparing for our next system, then the correct response will be that we are always developing new hardware.
“On the other hand, the most difficult question for us to answer in public in concrete terms is when we are going to launch our new hardware and what kind of hardware we are going to launch, and I am afraid that I cannot talk about this in more detail.”
There were words of reassurance for existing Wii U owners, however.
“We will continue to work hard to ensure that consumers who already own our platforms are satisfied, and make sure that people will continue to see great value in our software,” he added.
“I can certainly assure you that we are not at a dead end of any kind in which we are out of ideas for developing new hardware. I of course believe that launching new hardware will not produce good results unless we first make sure that those who have already purchased our platforms are satisfied.”
Lmao they will have been working on it for years now. Since the Wii U launched, at least.

It won't be. Iwata already blames himself for the company's loss of money, meaning he'll have learnt from the Will U failing and doesn't intend to repeat that.
The console wasn't even a bad idea, just too far ahead of its time. #Justice4WiiU
They better nawt be thinking of releasing no Wii U Ultra: The Re-Up right after I get my Mario Kart bundle though.
If they ditch the 'we're always right, we know it all' attitude, and drop the 'Wii' name, their next console might appeal to more than just their core fans.
I hope they drop the gimmicks too, no one is really here for the gamepad tablet thing, kinect and move. We just want good games that also look good. 1080p 60fps Legend of Zelda please.
They need to focus on their branding. The problem is third party supporters are never innovative and would rather put out the next generic 3rd person shooter a la Call of Duty or tragic platformers a la Knack for generic consoles with more power but 0 innovation like the XBox and Playstation because they sell more. It's much harder to put out something that utilizes two screens in an innovative way than it is to pump out shovelware, especially when the crappy shovelware will sell more.
I think the problem with the Wii U is it's too similar to the Wii and doesn't offer much more than the Wii does (I still love my Wii U though). Hopefully we'll get a few more high profile Wii U games first to help push sales (I would love new Zelda) and then they can release a new console in a couple years.

And third party support, literally no one wants to make games for the Wii U just like it happened for the Wii & it's been an eternity since they remembered Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, Earthbound and others that slay.
