I want to buy a new iphone 5s, but my friend is telling me to not spend almost $700 but instead get a refurbished iphone 5s, which is just like a brand new phone but cheaper.
I really don't want to spend $700 on a phone though
What do you guys suggest? Has anyone ever bought a refurbished phone?
Refurbished phones are considered new but the truth is that they come from different parts of different phones that came back in as defective, so technicians take out the working parts of one phone and the working parts of another phone and with that they make a new device. It's also worth noted that refurbished phones go through the correct function testing twice to ensure everything is working ok.
Personally I've had 2 iPhones replaced by Apple, was given refurbished devices and I didn't have a problem with them. Some people prefer a sealed phone in its boxed, others don't mind. A refurbished phone can be considered new, though, plus it's got warranty too so if it's an iPhone and breaks and you're under warranty they'll replace it so no worries. If the price difference is big I'd go for it.
refurbished > Used ( since refurbished phones have been tested for defects)
BUT (if you choose so) since you are saving by getting a refurbished phone - it wouldn't hurt to get a warranty (i study accounting - so just a bit of financial input too)
The only refurbished devices I can suggest are iPhones. The only reason I can is because at Apple, our iPhones really aren't "refurbished." The only thing we use from an older device is the motherboard. If the motherboard is salvageable, we rebuild an entirely new device around the motherboard. So that means everything is basically new.
Once the devices are done, they are put through extensive, hands-on testing to make sure that the device is up to par.
I always go for refurbished products when possible. I just make sure that you're aware of the terms of your return policy. The only time that I've had problems was with a refurbished router I bought once... I returned it maybe 7x in a row because I kept getting defective ones. I eventually gave up & got my money back on that particular router because wtf. Otherwise, never had issues.

I say "we" because I work for Apple.
Interesting , do you know if Samsung does this rigorous testing too?
