self-acceptance doesn't depend on acceptance from straight people, although intolerance from them can make the process longer and more painful, but they are the majority, they're the lawmakers, the bank owners etc
acceptance from straight people allows us to lead equal lives
I think it varies depending on where you live. Where I live (UK) I kiss my bloke in the street, hold hands, whatever I want.
If a straight doesn't accept you then they can walk on by in mismatched prints and ill-fitting clothing tbh
on an individual basis, its perhaps irrelevant, but as a whole its important straights accept us
perhaps the reason that straight person who doesn't accept just walks on by is because they know that the majority of people are accepting, their hate is in a minority

We shouldn't pander to them for acceptance - that gives them power over us.
Acceptance from straight people is way more important than some might think. It's the reason why gay rights are acknowledged in some places and not acknowledged in some.
In my "inner"/personal circle yeah.. It matters, I don't want to lose my relatives or friends because of my homosexuality (but if that happens is not really my problem). But I don't care about people that doesn't belong to my life. I hold hands, kiss and hug my boyfriend on the street, I don't care I live my life, people should do the same instead of gossip or hating. However, we need tolerance not only for us to live how we want to, also for our safety..
ideally how we live our lives should not be dictated by anyone's approval, we just live it the way we like it, but when it comes to fitting into right a society with its standard, I think it can be quite hard.. So yes?
Especially when there are still homophobic people roaming around

this
equal rights aren't won by a vocal minority, its about educating the majority, making them accepting, which then allows equal rights laws to be brought it
can anyone live a full life without equal rights? no
Of course. The majority has the power unfortunately so we're dependant upon the majority (aka. the "straight") approval, so if you live in a country and you and your same-sex partner have access to marriage, let alone legal protection, count your lucky stars. Still, a lot of people talk on ATRL as if all is said-and-done in the Western world where it could not be more true.
There's still so much hatred, fear and suspicion of homosexuals and alternates to the "traditional" sexual binary. I have never ever in my life even felt comfortable holding hands in public with someone of the same sex, which I don't think speaks just about me.
