Katy Perry stans for #1 Black female artist Emeli Sandé

Katy explained: “I was working with a producer group called Stargate, who I worked with on the last record, who I wrote Firework with. We were talking about different artists and who we were loving right then and there.
“They were saying they were in the studio with me and with Emeli that week, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I was just listening to her record’.
“My favourite song is Clown, I’m obsessed with that song, I think she is an incredible songwriter and such a gem.
“They were like, ‘We should just call her up and see if she wants to write’, and I was like ‘Yeah, dahhh’.
“I had this initial idea of writing a song about accepting your responsibility in a relationship that has gone south.
“It’s a different type of song to write, as when you write about relationships you’re either deeply in love or in the ‘f**k you’ stage or ‘I’m doing great without you’ stage. Rarely do you get a song that has a psychological depth about admitting your part.
“So Emeli came in and she totally understood the idea for the song.
“We have the same kind of perspective and I admire her style of writing.
“She was great, a great co-writer. I am playing It Takes Two on the tour, which is very exciting, as I get to play a lot of new songs, although I do play all the old ones too.”
