Frequency "equalization" is used to some extent to shape the sounds of all instruments and voices in all electronically amplified performances, whether in recording studios or live. While vocal coloring is one of the hallmarks of Lea's technique, I doubt she could do it all by herself to the degree we hear it in her Dorothy. "Glee" often sucked the lower range out of her high school sophomore character's voice, as is especially apparent, for example, from her deeper live DSB on Oprah and "Loser Like Me" on tour.
As to Megan, she sounds much better, and quite different, from what I remember of her on "Smash". Some (most?) of the improvement I detect might be due to the great sound quality difference between the audio recording and the telecast, as is always the case on "Glee".
