Marvel is getting ready to kill off one of its most iconic characters – Wolverine.
The century-old X-Man whose mutant healing capabilities make him virtually unkillable will meet his end in a four-issue miniseries, Death of Wolverine. The arc will be written by Charles Soule, with art by Steve McNiven (Civil War).
The Canadian hero made his first appearance 40 years ago in The Incredible Hulk #180. He was introduced to the X-Men universe in 1975.
Marvel executive editor Michael Marts talked about the decision to kill off Wolverine in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor,” says Marts. “He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for 100 years?”
How Wolverine meets his end is still TBD, but Marts tells EW that the character’s death will be teased this summer in the storyline, 3 Months to Die.
