Tell your bf to look over the history of rock and see how far it changed. I mean rock comes from R&B so if rock was that "pure" it would still sound like that and it doesn't.
Also keep in mind how females like Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morisette, Meredith Brooks used to chart on the rock charts/rock radio and their songs weren't THAT different from Avril
Avril herself has even been nominated for Rock Grammys.

This. If you compare Avril's earlier stuff to some of the "rock" that bands like Mayday Parade, 30 Seconds To Mars, etc put out, Avril's is far more "rock". But because her image has changed, and her music has become more commercial, she gets shoved into "pop", when she is still, to this day, pop-rock.
Tell your boyfriend to pull his head out of his anus and get educated.
