When Avril Lavigne's latest music video for "Hello Kitty" surfaced earlier today, it hit the higher-brow internet with a wave of pain. I'm not sure what it really is about it, so you better see for yourself.
The use of foreign-language lyrics in the chorus is something anime music listeners are used to; it's very common in J-pop and K-pop. But what happens when it's the reverse? There's something subversive about that in an English-language song.
That's not what is offensive, it is the use of weabo stereotypes. And my Japanese roommates, all three agree.

Ugh, I don't get this argument at all. The same exact accusation was lobbed at Sky Ferriera's "I Blame Myself" video because she had black backup dancers. How are they being used as "props"? How on Earth does this differ from any other video featuring backup dancers? Like, would it be better if they were all white but doing the same exact thing? Does their being Asian somehow make them props?
