I don't really understand...

Like, what sparks a stan war?

Most of the time the artists the two groups stan for have no issue with one another.

They're usually not even in competition
and sometimes one doesn't even know the other exists

Why does one group just up and decide to dislike the other artist and their music?

Where does the hate come from?
Is there a story behind these?

with some stan wars it has to do with 2 artists feuding, so its natural for their stans to feud: lil kim vs nicki, azealia vs everyone, disney stan wars, etc....

i don't really know about that either, but from what i read here, apparently Rih's people started a rumor about Rih and Jay.

Something happened that makes one fanbase dislike another. Some of them think one similar girl might be a threat to their faves and just hate on the newer girl. Sometimes one party might make a shady comment that some would assume was made towards their fave and hate on the one making the comment , the fan base reacts and boom now both stanbases dislike/shade each other.

Also, it seems like comparisons start stan wars. People hate when their faves are compared to new acts or when the media put label like "the new beyonce"

When their fave looses ha place at the top and is replaced by someone they thought was below her.

Well, one hoe does better than another, or their fanbase thinks their hoe does better, and then a lot of hoes get pressed either way because they can't build a bridge and get over it, and then they start fighting which pulls other hoes in who were perfectly fine with the situation at first, and then I have to warn people.

Success is always a big key factor

For example when two celebs that started around the same time or were on the same label and have some similarities, but one is extremely successful while another has lack luster sales. Fans can get intimidated [I've seen it happen]

Petty things can also start stan wars, like bringing up things that don't matter. Class for example is so unimportant to me especially when its brought up during an argument about sales

They are both black female successful pop stars. I know it's stupid but there is an argument over which black female artist is more successful.
