She has the Nick stigma just like Selena and Demi have the Disney stigma attached to them.
While you can argue that Miley also has that stigma, she came off a show that was the most successful in Disney history and singing was apart of the show, and we know how kids buy albums today (Looks at Frozen) so she had a big following from that.

Yours Truly felt more like an introduction to the masses. They kinda screwed up Baby I and Right There (wasn't even sent to its main format). There was also SO much wasted material: Honeymoon Avenue, Tattooed Heart, Piano etc. That Christmas Kisses EP just felt like a non-factor and negl Ari should've went along with her Halloween 2014 EP idea (the imagery would've slayed), put out a few YT singles, wrap up Sam & Cat, and THEN go ahead with the sophomore record.

Not complaining though, new music is always great Kinda wished that they had milked Ari's debut for what it was worth, could've definitely grabbed a Grammy nomination instead of just presenting for Lorde's win

Also, I feel like she wasn't READY to be marketed yet. As many others have mentioned before, Ariana was still associated with that Nick/Disney stigma. I'm sure this era will break those inhibitions.

I think she did well enough tbh. People like Katy are the biggest pop stars in the world, it doesn't mean you're a failure if you don't match their success.

The Way did really well, but I have no idea why Right There didn't match it, since I think it's amazing. Baby I was the worst of her singles (but still quite good). I think her three singles all sounded a bit similar, maybe that was why the follow-ups didn't match The Way's success.

you can disagree with her being pretty, & you can disagree with that being a reason to why someone might be successful. But there's no denying she's generally thought to be pretty & looks does help in showbiz.

Ariana was basically unknown to the general public before yours truly! I think she is just going to get more famous with her second album. I actually feel like she is going to be an album seller more than a singles artist.

she played a minor character though, her exposure (in my opinion) came from social media/social networking site involvement (Youtube/Twitter/etc.) For example, Victoria Justice starred on the show but she made much less impact than Ari did.

Ariana got a top 10 hit with the way, and her album went #1 tbh thats pretty good for a debut I think she'll get bigger with her 2nd album also if promoted better

I feel like her management didn't expect her single/album to do as well as they did, so they didn't know how to handle the era after The Way smashed and Yours Truly debuted at #1.

Hopefully for her next era they'll be more prepared and she can slay

Her image isn't so hot. Sometimes she's cute/basic, then she wears toddler & tiaras outfits, then she's got this ott lolita thing going on. Didn't Kenley from project runway dress her for a while? It's dumb but image is important when you're marketing a relative unknown. Plus her single choices after the way were unfortunate. They were very focused on making sure you knew she could sing, and while that's important they should have been focused on releasing bops like Piano instead Anyway all of this is easily fixed, she's talented and has a great sound. She just needs better management.
