Funny thing is mostly everyone that I talked said Bey's SB perf was great.

Every celebrity has a personality built up by the media. Makes it easier to frame a story if there's default personalities to refer to.

Kim Kardashian is always dumb and vapid, Gwyneth Paltrow thinking she's better than everyone, Britney being timid and on the verge of a breakdown, Gaga being psychotic and insecure. Like elements of truth in each, sure, but they never deviate from the set personality. So the minute Miley went from "sweet Christian" to "crazy girl" that's what they stick with.

The way the media treats Beyonce sometimes is ridiculous. They treat her like this revolutionary feminist yet:
a) Every single collaboration on her album is with a male artist. It's almost like she doesn't want to share the spotlight with another female.
b) She refuses to apologize for the "Eat the cake, Anna Mae" debacle and mouthed the words on a nationally televised live performance.
c) Calling her tour the Mrs. Carter Tour.
d) Her half-assed "essay" in the Shriver Report: http://shriverreport.org/gender-equa...-myth-beyonce/ which actually shows she's either clueless when it comes to feminism or she just is not passionate about it.
e) Calling herself KING B, which suggests she thinks Queens are below Kings.
I am convinced she is using this whole "feminist" shtick for sales and publicity, I mean, she didn't even want to label herself a feminist a year ago (http://www.vogue.co.uk/news/2013/04/...view-may-vogue) now she's milking it for all its worth? I won't even mention the way the media champion her as some gay rights hero when the only time she has acknowledged that is on a paper napkin.

I absolutely agree. It was a boring performance but it seems like the media is forcing us to adore Beyonce.

Meh. I think a lot of it is due to positioning and how their initial fan bases were built and where they stand now. Miley's primary fan base starting with Hannah Montana was built on children -- there's a lot more outrage with what she's doing at this point given that there are still a lot of parents of underage kids still highly invested in what Miley's doing. And that's likely because the kids she was catering to just a few years ago on Hannah Montana are still fans and many are still very young. It's the sharp 180 in a very short time frame that has really gotten Miley and garnered most of the backlash and criticism she's received.

On the flip side, Beyoncé's career has never been truly been oriented towards small children -- even when she was a teenager herself. She's always had lyrics with sexual content, has always worn revealing clothing and had risqué choreography. And at this point in her career, given how her fan base has grown with her, most of her fans are 20 somethings and the younger end is typically in their mid-late teens. Of course she has some children that are fans, but primarily her fan base is adult at this point.

There are also cultural implications as well. Black women/culture in general is seen as far more hypersexualized and therefore the same standards don't apply as they do with the White "girl next door"/America's sweetheart standard and pedestal that young white female stars often get labeled with -- and usually face backlash whenever that is rejected. See Britney, Christina etc.

The only one of these that isn't a pathetic reach and has little bearing on whether or not someone is a feminist is the Eat The Cake line.

I don't anyone in the world is perfect feminist, to be a perfect feminist is to be free from all gender-based expectations and roles, the media has been extremely critical of her aligning herself with feminism
