Corporal Punishment of Children - Your Thoughts?
Quote:
Domestic corporal punishment also known as physical discipline is the use of physical force for the purpose of correction or control of behavior from parent/guardian to child. It typically involves the corporal punishment of a child by a parent or guardian in the home—normally the spanking or slapping of a child with the parent's open hand, but occasionally with an implement such as a belt, slipper, cane or paddle. This form of punishment is associated with and used in the authoritarian parenting style.
In many cultures, parents have historically been regarded as having the duty of disciplining their children, and the right to spank them when appropriate. Since July 1979, 34 countries around the world (at 2013) have outlawed domestic corporal punishment of children. In Europe, 22 countries have banned the practice. Enforcement of such laws is rare, however, and the practice remains common in many countries. In Africa [citation needed], the Middle East, and in most parts of Eastern Asia (including China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea), corporal punishment of one's own children is lawful.
Similarly, school corporal punishment, an official punishment for misbehaviour by school students, involves striking the student a given number of times in a generally methodical and premeditated ceremony. The punishment is usually administered either across the buttocks or on the hands, with an implement specially kept for the purpose such as a rattan cane, wooden paddle, slipper, leather strap or wooden yardstick. Less commonly, it could also include spanking or smacking the student in a deliberate manner on a specific part of the body with the open hand, especially at the elementary school level.

Opinions are divided on whether spanking is helpful or harmful to a child's behavior. Public attitudes towards the acceptability and effectiveness of spanking vary a great deal by nation and region. Some people even refer the act of physically disciplining a child as child abuse. What are your thoughts on the matter ATRL? Do you think physical discipline is the best way to discipline a child? Sometimes we do not realize it but a mere slap we had in our childhood because of something wrong we did will prevent us from repeating the same mistake throughout our lifetime.
