Did anyone else feel the earthquake this morning, I live a few hundred miles away and it woke me up. My girlfriends family lives in Louisville KY and they said there whole house shook, broken glasses, mirrors etc. Who would have thought in the middle of the country. Earthquakes can happen anywhere

Yeah, I didn't feel it but a lot of people at school were talking about how they did. I guess I slept through it lmao.

I slept through it, but a lot of my friends didn't, so I was quite surprised to find out there was one.

I slept through it, and there was an aftershock at 10:20 AM CDT.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports it preliminary registered as a 4.6 magnitude quake. The epicenter was five miles from West Salem, IL, which is near the Indiana border. The initial earthquake hit at 4:37 AM CDT, and was originally a 5.4 on the Richter Scale, but the USGS revised it to a 5.2, and could make another revision. The epicenter was 117 miles east of Granite.
Impact in the STL Metro Area:
In Granite City, Illinois (where I'm from), there was little impact, but in Chester, Illinois, School was dismissed at 11:00 AM.
In St. Louis City, Outer lanes on the Kingshighway viaduct were closed between Shaw and Vandeventer for a short time after the initial earthquake.
In Mt. Carmel, buildings were damaged, particularly older ones.

Well, in Central Missouri, about 50/50 of people did and did not feel it. I think Columbia felt it more than Jefferson City did, so that's why we probably didn't feel it as hard. Although, I do remember in my dream that I was falling off from a cliff. That might of been when it happened.

You know, that's not a good sign for Missourians. Especially central Missourians! If it gets closer and harder to the New Madrid Fault, then damns could burst and major power outages and major flooding would happen.

5.4 on the Richter Scale? That is basically nothing, or not? maybe because I live in an earthquake zone and I'm so used to them?

i don't know if u know ... but back in the 1800's ... an earthquake that could have easily surpassed a 10+ on the richtar scale came out of that area... .it made the mississipi river flow backwards... they said if it ever happened again... which it will even people in Texas (where i live @ will feel the earthquake)

It depends on which location you are at. If the intensity is low on an area that has many infrastructures, there could be a lot of impact and damage. However, if the intensity is high on an area but has no infrastructures (suppose it happens on a desert), there could be no impact at all. The Mercalli scale is used to measure the damage made by an earthquake while the Richter scale is used to measure the intensity of an earthquake.
