Microsoft announces Office for iPad
Microsoft confirms Office for iPad
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Thursday unveiled Office for iPad, a highly anticipated and long overdue version of its bread-and-butter productivity software for Apple's popular tablet.
The move enforces Microsoft's recognition that it must deliver services to both businesses and consumers wherever they are, especially on mobile devices.
The iPad apps for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are free in Apple's App Store. You'll be able to read and present your content that way, but for creating and editing content, you will need an Office 365 subscription.
The launch marks the "beginning of exploration for us," Nadella said in his opening remarks.
Office software lets you create and edit documents, calculate spreadsheets and design presentations and graphics through its Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs. Microsoft moved to a subscription model for Office last year with Office 365 Home Premium, which runs $9.99 a month, or $99.99 a year. A personal version for one computer and one tablet is due this spring for $69.99 a year.

Mobile Office apps have already been available for iPhone and Android smartphones, with a required Office 365 subscription. As of Thursday, you can edit content for free on phones.

That's brilliant.
Bringing O365 to more end users. and Cloud is Nadella's speciality.

BUT why do I want to pay Microsoft when Apple gives me the exact same suite for free out the gate?

Because Microsoft need people to have a reason to buy 365. Majority of the tablet market (nearly all of it actually) are iPads. I knew you wouldn't be able to buy it like Pages etc. though.
I prefer Pages & Keynote. Numbers compared to Excel is meh.

365 is more than Office though. This isn't for regular folks, this is for workers who work in a place that has 365 and need to access their email from Exchange and their files from SharePoint, One Drive etc. and gradually wean them onto the more superior Microsoft mobile devices.
And the bolded is false, but that's for another thread.

Not a damn rental service Microsoft is ridiculous. They just don't want to give Apple the 30% of the app price.
If the app somehow gets cracked and I ever get an iPad, maybe I'll try it

O365 generates more then $20 billion for Microsoft, though.

First of all, relevance? And second, source? Google says that their entire Business Division was worth $20 billion in 2011, or that 360 was worth $1.5 billion this past year.
Anyway, I just watched their ad for this and it looks nice. Also they are giving Apple their 30% with the in-app purchases of 360 I'm not sure how productive it'll be, people will probably want a physical keyboard attachment, but at least it's finally an option and it looks nicely done. I just need them to release a new Office for Mac

Microsoft's entire cloud business, which consists of O365 and its other cloud based platforms that are encompassed in it (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Dynamics Online, Lync, Office Online, and Azure, depending on who you ask) is worth $20 Billion, they generate 1.5 billion a year

The point of bringing it up was that its more than just a rental service. It's a pretty damn good strategy, actually. I wont be surprised if Windows actually does win the tablet market

Still not seeing the $20 billion number in the source tho
The subscription pricing works for small businesses, but personal users haven't and won't warm up to it anytime soon. Adobe is doing the same thing with their CC ******** and the majority of their user base is either sticking with CS6 or illegally downloading CC. Rental software isn't going to catch on because it's anti-consumer and a ripoff for individuals, and if Microsoft ever tries forcing it onto people like Adobe is, it's really not going to last. We saw what happened with the Xbone. If Microsoft just charged like $150-$200 for Office for iPad, they would probably get a lot more sales. It'll be interesting to see the numbers after a few months.

Someone who works for Microsoft in Germany said earlier this month that they're planning on releasing a new version this year, the second quarter to be exact.
http://www.macworld.com/article/2106...this-year.html
It would make sense to me that they would release a new Office for both iPad and OS X during the same time frame. I may be an Apple user but Office is the only productivity software I could ever use, and having to use the current fugly and laggy version for Mac is grating
