Basically

She is indie if anything because her record label (the same as Katy's) wanted her to be a bubblegum pop star, why they signed her in the first place. She was made to record all these pop songs which is why it took so long for her to release her first album, lots of label conflicts with the direction SHE wanted and what THEY wanted. While Night Time, My Time is a rock album, she has nothing but love for the pop genre! Also from that interview:
