Is Buffy one of the most iconic/daring/brilliant shows ever?
I only became a fan recently but I remember the impact it made. It seemed to define the 90's in a way (or at least the mid-late 90's) and it was still huge in 00's even when the show made a HUGE creative turn after High School Buffy. Willow came out as bi/lesbian (very risky to do at that time), Buffy Season 6 had much more mature themes not found in a "teen" show (rape, depression, sex, total 180 from the first few seasons), featured daring episodes (musical episode, "Hush", "The Body"). You never know who was going to die next (even Buffy herself died a couple times or so). The show explored a wide range of genres, such as comedy, romantic drama, action, sci-fi, horror and so on. The actors and writers (especially Joss) were brilliant and most of the them still have a huge career now. Who would've known when the movie flopped and the show first began? Apparently even SMG said her friends told her that hopefully she'll find something better when doing the first season.
I have all of the seasons on DVD (as well with Angel), but haven't seen them all yet. So I'm not good read the OP to avoid any possible spoilers. Gonna finish the series this summer hopefully.
What really puts me off with shows like this is sci-fi. When it's so unrealistic I can't really appreciate the way the characters feel and act like they would in the real world as they would never be put in certain situations. This way they become more like a soap opera.

But with Buffy even in the most dire soap operatic moments there was ALWAYS wittiness and comedy. There was always a sense of humor and it wasn't afraid to make fun of itself sometimes. Besides, Buffy was very relatable or else it wouldn't have the cult fanbase it still has/had or the amount of lives it changed. You know monsters could be used as metaphors to real life problems? Sunnydale High School was on a literal hellmouth, which was high school explained in a nutshell to a lot of people.
But, yes. Absolutely, especially considering Buffy is the epitome of female representation in television people are currently begging for. Complex characters, well thought out (mostly, lol) stories, impeccable writing. Just .
ehh, it has major inconsistency problems. For every truly brilliant episode there are two or three lame filler episodes. It's seriously a struggle to get through seasons 1, 4, 6 and 7.
At its best it was truly up there with the best TV shows of all time, but you have to tread through some serious mediocrity to get to those good bits and that's why I would hesitate to agree with you!
