He was added at last minute because the original members didn't blend well and weren't talented (except James' killer vocals) so the producers gave him a chance to fix BTR (and their stupid name: Brand New Day) and it worked.
He's basically the glue that has kept the group together for nearly 5 years now and he has also written several songs for the band and even played live during most of their concerts.
