My grandma used to have them and she treated them well and paid them okay. She wasn't rich or anything but my aunts and uncles gave her money because she was old an could not clean the house. It's just a job like any other.
I love our maids, they're like part of the family. It's a bit of a weird dynamic if you think about it too much (people living in your house who do everything for you and aren't allowed to leave except for one day of the week) but we treat them really really well, and its the best job they could get right now, if not they'd be living in a shared room in awful conditions.
I used to have a maid back in my country before i came to the US.
We treated her like our family member. My mom treated her like she's her daughter.
We got a maid because my mom is always busy working. (No daughter to do choirs and cooking. I was a little boy.)
