The picture with Harry Styles in the native headdress inspired this. People were arguing about wether it was racist or not and also wether cultural appropriation were subcategories of eachother. Would someone like to educate me on this? I have always thought they were related but different issues. I think of racism as thinking of different races as being somehow inferior or 'different' whereas cultural appropriation is to my knowledge trying to adopt a culture without proper understanding/connection/appreciation for and to it. Am I wrong? Is cultural appropriation a form of racism? Or are they different (both wrong though of course)?

Sheesh and I just wrote a great comment on it. Basically what you said is right, but cultural appropriation is a form of racism. It's like not caring about the meanings and symbolism of cultural artifacts.

But cultural appropriation is being derogatory to a race by ignoring it's historic, cultural and symbolic artifacts and the significance of them. So you just clocked and exposed yourself as talking about stuff you clearly have no clue about. And I'm not defending any of my faves who've done it, because they have and I'm not (generally) impressed. However there is such a thing as an artistic licence but like all art, it's subjective and open to criticism.

its not that i don't know its that i don't care. getting all pissy cause someone wears something form some dead religion or a costume that literally is only worn as a costume these days is just so irrelevant. how can it affect you in any way. have you ever been in a forever 21? literally dreched in clothing with crosses all over it. should "minorities" be stopped from wearing crowns or princess style dresses? that was a culture once upon a time too. maybe i just don't understand cause in my country we celebrate cultural difference. i can go wear a sari and get henna tattoos at dhwalil and then i can go to china town in a kimono or what ever and not only is it okay, its encouraged, i don't understand why someone would be offended by someone celebrating their culture

Okay the fact is we don't want stupid high income tumblr retards running around wearing items that symbolize our colored cultures. Just because our cultures are interesting doesn't mean your automatically accepted im sorry but the thousands of years of racism faced by colored people cannot be justified and forgotten about, they need to NOW take the KARMA. The KARMA in this case is disallowing them the freedom to explore our cultures. ITS PART OF OUR IDENTITIES NOT YOURS also they don't understand **** about any of the cultures. This is coming from an indian/afghan/persian mixed teenager who constantly sees the blatant theft of my culture/identity by 12 YEAR OLD ****S!!

This is why religion and culture causes war. It's not that big of a deal as you are making out. People dress up theatrically for historical re-enactments and is that racist? NO.

I dont WANT people adopting anything related to my culture until they have been given back the ******** coloured people have been facing for years.

On cultural appropriation I will say that the internet has allowed many groups who have been silenced a platform to speak out on and be heard. These groups have had trouble getting media attention and finally are allowed to say "we have a problem with that" about things that were taken from them, stripped of their importance and trivialized.

People who want to say social media invented it are getting at that for the wrong reason. Although they take problem with the crowd of support they get, historically it's always been young adults who align themselves with social issues and speak out and try to change the way people think.

He wasn't wearing it in mockery. Now if he put it on, and painted his whole body red, than that's a whole other issue. But just to appreciate other cultures clothing and wear it? So should black people not put on greek clothes? Should white people not wear a kimono? Should an asian be called racist because he wan't to dress up like an aztec warrior?

Culture ignorance/appropriation isn't really racism IMO. That's implying all races have one culture only. Which isn't true at all. It's kind of a step to the side of racism though. It can be offensive, but it's generally forgiven a lot more because it's being ignorant and uneducated. Rather than just be plain hateful.

Yes. If it is being celebrated, than I see nothing wrong with it. Now of course there are lines you can cross, but that is with everything. Wearing some outdated traditional outfit, that Native American's don't even wear anymore on a daily basis is not racist to me. Now, I can see if he went on a Native American reserve and wore a full outfit trying to be funny, that's a difference, but c'mon, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
