Also I think it's more of a case of using less harsh and offensive language than anything else. Society has evolved and changed since lots of things were originally name or titled, so obviously it makes sense to re-title things so that they fit more with modern society and aren't as demeaning or offensive anymore.

Someone self-employed can actually be self-employed, but a lot of times people use it so they don't admit that they are no longer employed by their former company.

The first two are just more correct.
Prisons/Jails are about more than just jailing people now, they are about rehabilitation (or at least they are meant to be) so that one is just more accurate.
Self employed does not mean unemployed.
Developmentally disabled also refers to many physical disabilities, not just mental.
Also terminate pregnancy refers to any way that you would do just that where as abortion is more specific.

Mess at self-employed vs. unemployed and aesthetically challenged vs ugly. For a start, self employed doesn't bare relation to being unemployed, and how good someone looks is a subjective thing. Nobody uses the term "aesthetically challenged" anyway, because even that would be offensive to use in this day and age.

Also, calling someone mentally slow isn't overly offensive (well, it still is) and is still used by some GP's as a diagnosis. Disability covers much more than mental illness, and a much more offensive term would be something along the lines of "retarded" which no one wants to be called, disabled or not. We live in a fairly non-PG world anyway. Terms like the latter, fat, ugly, stupid etc. are still used by many on a daily basis in a professional and non-professional place. Same for race and sexuality marks. The N word has become trendy as has "gay" become a negative insult almost. The world is still pretty ****.
