Check out some highlights from the interview:
On going back to her rock side…
“I feel like being more in touch with that rock side within me. The advantage of being a solo artist is that you can experiment so much. You can move with freedom in your career. I’ve done so many styles of music throughout my professional life. It allows me to go from pop and dance to ballads to rock. And right now with this album I feel like I’m kind of being more in touch with my roots and the way I started making music….this album has a little bit of everything. Its very eclectic. It has a rock side, it has folk, dance, reggae and even a little bit of country.”
On working with Blake Shelton…
“I wrote this song with some people from Nashville. So I sent it to Blake.. at first I did like 8 versions of this song. I did a dance version, a pop version, different kind of versions. And I ended up, you know, going back to where I should have started from the beginning, the country style. And so I sent the song to him hoping that he would like it. But I was very nervous, because he’s an authority in country music and I didn’t know if he was going to like it or not. And he said that he loved it, loved it, loved it, and he wanted to be on it. I was so happy.”
On her first two seasons with The Voice…
“I was surprised to see how easy the first season I did was on me. The whole chemistry with the guys was great. I had so much fun the first time. I was pregnant, I was hormonal, but for some reason it was easy! And now it’s great. I feel at home really…its not easy to be the only girl there. I completely get Christina. It’s a tough job. And its hard to mentor already. You put your heart and soul onto the flourishing careers of the contestants. You want them to do the best they can. And you want to be there for them. Its not easy, ya know? And on top of that you have to compete and toughen up and deal with these three guys that are tough cookies.”
On working with Rihanna…
“At this point, I can’t do any more videos with men, so I’m going to have to do them with women….She’s just like the girl next door and she is really, I think, the sexiest woman I’ve seen. Hands down, because I can be sexy, but you have to give me a countdown. Like, ‘Shakira, be sexy. 3, 2, 1. Go!’ You know? But she’s sexy all the time! She’s so cool and mellow….Also, so down to earth. That’s nice, to work with someone, because it is intimidating to working with a diva, you know, someone who is so, so successful. You never know how they’re going to be…We’re both Caribbean and I think that’s sort of the common ground that we share and that’s why I think it made so much sense for us to be in this song together. This song has got that reggae, island feel and she’s definitely that. She’s so reggae. She brought so much authenticity to the song and to me, it was like a huge honor to be with her on this project.”
On being a mom…
“[Milan] has taught me how to delegate [and] how to let go a little bit more because I can be in the recording studio forever, many, many hours and just spend the night in the studio working and I can’t do that anymore, you know? I have a baby at home….We have a little playground area at The Voice where all the babies hang out…and Carson’s going to be the father-in-law of my son because [Carson’s] got the cutest girl that you can ever imagine!”
