BILLBOARD: New Janet Jackson Album Due in February
New Janet Jackson Album Due in February
November 27, 2007, 11:05 AM ET | Borys Kit, The Hollywood Reporter
Janet Jackson's as-yet-untitled debut album for Island Def Jam will be released in February. The artist is also prepping a worldwide tour to promote the follow-up to 2006's "20 Y.O." In addition, Jackson has signed with the William Morris Agency for representation in all areas.
Jackson comes to the company after a starring role in Tyler Perry's hit "Why Did I Get Married?" She will be repped by a team of agents led by Dave Wirtschafter and Charles King that will run across multiple divisions of the agency, including film, touring, licensing and merchandising, television, theater, publishing and new technology.
Jackson said she was attracted to the agency because of its long history. She continues to be repped by managers Johnny Wright and Kenneth Crear as well as attorney Don Passman.
As for Jackson's new album, it is being executive produced by Def Jam CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid rather than Jackson's boyfriend, Island Urban president Jermaine Dupri.
Dupri is working on Mariah Carey's new album, which should be out next spring. "We're going to make it seem like we're in competition to see who's going to have the biggest album of the year," he told Billboard in July.

I wonder if she'll waste another $1 million on an awful video for an awful song

I was actually pleased with 20 Y.O., but there weren't that many hits from it. I hope she can pull some better music out of herself this time around.

i shouldn't really be excited for this considering how much she disappointed me with her last 2 albums; but i am actually really looking forward to this. it'll probably be pushed back though, February seems too soon.

It is rumored that the single will be premiered in the early part of January 08 and that she is currently working on her new video.
Regarding the past two albums:
(1) Damita Jo: This was immediately following the Superbowl fiasco. Do you think she would have received the overwhelming support after this issue? The radio stations refused to play her tracks due to the backlash and didn't want negative press. Yet, the album debuted at #2 without the support of the major media stations, including the beloved MTV.
(2) 20 Y.O.: The backlash was not as strong, but was not supported at radio. "Call On Me" was #1 on R&B charts but did not chart well on Hot 100 because of the radio stations who were selective on how to bring Janet back to mainstream. Virgin Records did not support her effort fully either. Yet, she still debuted at #2, behind Ludacris.
This album, not yet titled, is headed by L.A. Reid and Universal. I believe that she will have the support needed, especially after the success of her movie getting to #1. Sometimes, artists have a slump. Look at Britney....Blackout is not even in the Top 10. She is not being supported by promotion or radio. Let's be real...it makes a difference. If you keep hearing a Beyonce, Justin or Rihanna song, they will get the sales.
Marketing 101.

I liked it when Janet and Nelly did that duet for Call On Me. The video was pretty bad though. But Call On Me definitely should have went top 10 on the Billboard Charts.

The Call on Me video was hot! She'll probably flop unless she goes back to the All for You roots or work with Danja.

True it's not being promoted, but radio is playing her songs.
Anyways I'm so excited for this.

you can make all the excuses you want for Damita Jo and 20 Y.O.'s poor sales, but they were lousy albums plain and simple. it has nothing to do with the super bowl issue, it has to do with janet delivering music without any conviction.

I have a question and a comment:
Did you listen to both albums?
I am willing to submit that her latest efforts were not as strong as a "Velvet Rope", but during this record, she was depressed and released "Together Again" that was an international success because it was actually played on radio. For you to suggest that she is delivering music without conviction is simply narrow minded.
However, you the have the right to your opinion. Reading your other posts shows that you are here to place negative comments were it suits you. Congratulations! You have a response...I know this is what you were expecting.

^okay, I thought R&B Junkie, I Want You, and My Baby were great on Damita Jo, but the rest of it was bad...seriously bad. I can't believe how degrading DJ was after all the respect Janet had garnered up until that point. Her vocals were all phoned in, the production/melodies were weak, and the lyrics were unerotic/disgusting/unoriginal. 20 Y.O. had some good songs--Show Me, Daybreak, and Enjoy, in particular. I also enjoyed Get It Out Me, Take Care, and This Body as guilty pleasures. My problem with her is she's become so trashy, her lyrics in every one of the songs on 20 y.o. have something to do with sex. Her vocals for the last 2 albums sound phoned in (at best) and display no sense of creativity. Remember when Prince, Madonna, George Michael sang about sex? they usually had some substance (and so did Janet up until DJ). She isn't giving us anything new and she's embarassing herself, we've heard these moans and groans and sexual come-ons for 15 years from her--enough already! 20 Y.O. was lousy because she basically summed up her 20 year career with nothing but sex, she used to stand for something (although now i'm beginnning to think that was all a product of Jimmy Jam and Terry's genius).
another thing that pisses me off, in 1994 Janet got up on her high horse and insulted Madonna by saying she had no class. I agree that Madonna deserved the flak for the SEX book she released, but if you actually read the book you'd see some serious insight and social commentary. Janet delivers sex just for the purpose of sex which proves to me that she's actually the one without class.
one last thing, please stop giving me grief for "plac[ing] negative comments were it suits [me]". I don't come here just to bitch people out, apparently you ignore whenever I have something positive to say which is probably about 60% of the time. but thank you for the response, you have the right to your opinion too--but not if you can't defend it.

Interesting post....
In fact, I agree with many of your comments because you decided to qualify what you had to say. Prior to my response, you made a choice to blantantly characterize the album in a negative light. Your comments left the impression that there was nothing good on the album.
I actually agree with you comments about the sexual songs, but I believe that Janet does offer creativity (Velvet Rope - her own story, etc). Regarding Madonna: she may be considered Queen Madge, but she is not even in the same league as Janet. She has always needed a ploy for a following. Janet disappointed me for using the Superbowl to bring Justin on board for that stupid song. She did not have to resort to that, even if it was an accident. She could have done the show by herself.
Anyway, I responded to the negative comments to this post. I can defend my opinion and I appreciate you took the time to defend yours.

I appreciate both Madonna and Janet, although I don't agree that Janet is better than Madonna. Velvet Rope is an incredible album though--"You" lands somewhere in my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
Well, for Janet I've been disappointed in her albums lately, with Madonna I've been disappointed in her integrity as a human being. And of course, 20 Y.O. and DJ weren't completely awful! Just really bad in comparison to the albums that came before them IMO.
