Xbone & PS4 will sell 100 Million by 2020
PS4, Xbox One will both reach 100m units - DFC
Quote:
In fact, while the Wii was the only console of the last generation to exceed the 100 million units sold mark, DFC is forecasting that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One both hit that mark (by 2020) and that "price and strength in Europe give the PlayStation 4 a slight edge." Moreover, PS4 "could easily become lead platform for Western and Japanese developer / publishers." That said, DFC said there's still "a great deal of room for positioning by both companies." If DFC's model holds true, it would be the first time that two competing systems both sold 100 million units.
|
Quote:
One potential obstacle to the 100 million mark for either console could be if another competitor launches an attractive new system, whether Amazon, Apple, Nintendo or some other company. Because of this possibility, Cole said that DFC was actually "conservative" with its estimates.

We already know who's getting there first.

No they won't, not without a major price drop. Bare in mind people are effectively getting poorer, not to mention there's nothing particularly innovative about either console; literally their only selling point is being able to sell the new games.
Only 3 consoles have ever done, the chances of both - or even one - of this gen's consoles topping 100m are ridiculously slim.

How are people "effectively getting poorer"? What? Elaborate.
The video game industry is growing immensely, there is a high possibility of this happening (at least for the PS4), especially with the right games being released.

Population increase, employment rates not exactly increasing. The world is rapidly having to support more people on the same amount of cash. I'm not saying people can't afford the consoles, but they're less likely to spend $500 on a console right now, hence the need for big price cuts.
Seriously? PS sales dropped massively from the PS2 to PS3, so why would the jump to the PS4 be any different? The console offers just as little as the seventh gen consoles did (excl. the Wii), while being more expensive and having a smaller category for the foreseeable future. I don't just don't see the foundation to say that one or two consoles this generation will join the 100m club when only 3 consoles have ever done it, all the while there are hundreds of failures that don't come close.

Well, that is a valid point, but on average I believe more people around the world are becoming richer rather than poorer. In the United States people are conserving their money right now, but if the economy were to take an upward swing in the next few years, people will easily be willing to spend a lot more.
True, but the PS3 has sold 80 Million+ units (and is still selling better than any 7th gen console right now). The PS4 is in the perfect spot right now to sell 100 Million, unlike the PS3 was when it first got started. It is off to a brilliant start, and can easily capitalize on its lead with some great announcements and game releases.

Can the Xbox One get there though? I don't know anyone who owns one outside of my cousin who is a huge stan for Microsoft and I know Microsoft's execs want to drop the Xbox brand (as well as Bing). The Playstation 4 will have no problems due to a healthy new wave coming in throughout next year and doesn't have any shortages at the moment. Not to mention Japan.

True, and of course we're long due an upswing, so with all reasonable belief it could happen.
I see the logic in it for sure, especially given the success of the PS3 and 360, it just seems a little iffy to me given that people seem to actually care about gaming less when there's not a gimmick out there.
All of this is pretty meaningless for me to say though in all honesty, because the XBO and PS4 sales so far have been incomprehensible, down to the figures they sold even within their first weeks. I didn't expect anything like this in the slightest, so I guess anything's possible in terms of future sales.

Not sure about the Xbone either honestly. That is what seems to be a bit of a stretch for me in this article. I personally do not see the Xbone pulling anything above 75 Million, but maybe with enough solid exclusives it would have a small chance. The PS4 really is the major candidate right now in the 8th generation to pass 100 Million.

Yes, I hope we experience an economic upswing soon, we have been down for too long.
I guess we will just have to see. The PS4 is definitely going to need a lot of great exclusives to achieve this, but I see it as a major possibility for them. I was also very surprised by the PS4's start in relation to the amount of quality games it currently has available on it, so like you said, the future of the system is really unpredictable at this point.

So the Xbone is going to sell 50 million in the US and 50 million in the UK? Cause no one else is buying it.
It won't even pass the 360. Not even close.
